Celtics trade Isaiah Thomas, Brooklyn 2018 pick & players for Kyrie Irving

Some writers think just the one pick is the entire basis of the upcoming CLE rebuild:

Ref: Cavs face crossroads decision with Isaiah Thomas' hip putting trade on hold

To me that's waaaaay overselling the pick. We don't know what position it will be, and we don't know what player will be there in that position, and we don't know how long that player will take to develop. However it's a bright shiny object for the fans to focus on as LeBron packs his bags, so they need it bad.

I read something interesting recently, maybe on the Ringer (if I run across it again, I'll update my post) which said that Cleveland's entire scouting department had basically stopped caring about college ball or European prospects, but were suddenly and totally re-energized by this trade bringing the Nets' pick.

Kinda a funny commentary on the state of the franchise's professionalism, but I also wonder if those scouts will go back to their desktop solitaire tournaments if the pick is returned to Boston.

That's a way worse trade though.
Agree completely.

But facing a year with Irving still in CLE is a Chernobyl waiting to happen.

They just might do it.

With that said Danny will tell them to F off.

yup, and if Im Milwaukee it becomes an even worse trade because I am downgrading some of the return with Cleveland having no outs. You arent getting Middleton, Brogdon and a 1st again

I'd rather make Kyrie play than take that Milwaukee offer lol. Brogdon was a nice pick but, I don't think his ceiling is very high.

If the Cavs void the trade and try to trade Kyrie to Phoenix. Kyrie has the right to void any trade. Imagine if he veto's the trade to the Suns then the Cavs are really screwed

CLE is posturing to see if Danny breaks and gives more

id imagine Danny wont budge, and CLE will end up accepting trade

if CLE does void trade though, that'd be funny

A lot less criminal behavior off field in the NBA. Don't know if you really want to compare the two for professionalism.

Great point, if the amount of crimes committed by players had anything to do with how the leagues conducts front office business between teams.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the C's throw in one of their own 1st round picks over the next 2-3 years with top 5 or 10 protections on it, or offer CLE the chance to swap picks once over some time period if they really need to add sweetener to save the deal.

Time to find out whether the NBA has a Commissioner or another Goodell. These shenanigans that Cleveland is trying to pull should be punished and not rewarded, and even nulling the trade over this would be a reward for Cleveland. You mean the guy who had to leave a playoff series because of hip problems has hip problems? YOU DON'T SAY?!

I have no idea what the Commissioner's powers are in this case, but if the Celtics shared Thomas' medicals with the Cavs, the Cavs should not be able to back out of the deal. Deflategate has conditioned me to expect that this will not go the Celtics' way, but hopefully Silver a better man than Goodell.

I don't think Silver has much of a say here. It is in the bylaws of the league that every trade is contingent upon players passing physical examinations with their new team. A team can voluntarily waive the right to void a trade based on a failed physical, but Silver cannot force them to do so.

I don't think the NBA has a "in the best interest of the league" card to play, though they did block a trade between the Lakers and New Orleans a few years back. At the time the NO franchise was in limbo and the league was running it and vetoed the NO GM's proposed trade.

Hmm? I don't think Kyrie can do that.

I think people are a little confused on what the terms were, I believe they made the trade pending a physical and the Cavs approval (which is perfectly reasonable) the Cavs didn't accept the trade and then try to back out.

doesn't matter......if the deal falls through, we all go on our merry way as though it never happened in the first place.......and we have that pick back

I'd like to have Irving, but it doesn't start or stop there

I'll be fine.

The question is will the 2017-2018 Celtics.

they were fine before the deal was announced.....so why wouldn't they.......neither Thomas nor Crowder would gripe about coming back......this wasn't a dump those guys thing....it was get an Irving thing.....if Thomas wants to ruin his chances at a max deal or anything close, he could go off and sulk somewhere......and Crowder is just not the sort

Oh right forgot about that, wonder if that's a deal breaker for Phoenix.

it changes irvings value and really puts the suns into wheel spinning mode if they deal bledsoe, TJ Warren, Marquese Chriss, and a draft pick

in other words, it wont turn them into a winner

there's no confusion. Cleveland is attempting extortion.

They haven't cancelled the trade and this is them going back to the bargaining table to work out a new deal.

This is them, mid-stream, saying "oh idk, that hip looks kinda bad. I think we need the guy you just took 3rd overall on top of everything else"

Even a used car dealer doesn't pull things like this

If Cavs are going to have Crowder and IT in their facility and aren't going to accept the trade, Ainge should file tampering charges.
