So, I saw this article by Nicole Yang of the Globe. It caught my eye because it said Belichick commented on "impending cuts"..

Last I looked, cuts didn't have to be made until after the 4th Pre-season game. That's almost 2 weeks away. There might be some cuts of players Belichick thinks can latch onto other teams prior to that, but the roster cuts are only to 53 now.. They removed the cut down to 75.
Bill Belichick on imminent Patriots cuts: ‘There is stress on everybody and there is stress on every team.’

Maybe it's just me but I don't consider decisions that won't be made for another 10-14 days to be "imminent"

I know this is the part of his job that BB(and all hcs) hates. Gonna be particularly tough this year. Some good players are gonna get cut.

I agree..

Perhaps I missed it, but I did not see that Belichick used the word "imminent"; I only saw it used in the headline. The phrase "impending cuts" was used by the author, not Belichick.

If BB did use the words imminent or impending, it was most likely used in the context of how soon roster decisions and cuts will be made, in comparison to the length of an NFL football season. (Note how he was talking about pressure in October, pressure in November, etc.)

In defense of the author and her editor, we are only ten days away from the deadline to get rosters down to 53 players.

I wish rosters could be at least 60 players.
I don't. I love the 53. Because not only does BB cut players - but he's found real gems when other teams get their roster in order...

BB's genius is bountiful : and the end-of-roster management is just one of the places he shines. Malcolm Butler ? Miam.

Remember, even if he makes the cuts at the deadline, he's probably talking with his people and getting their feedback days before the deadline. None of these decisions are going to be made lightly, and all of them take time. For him, 8 days away is "impending" even though he didn't use the word, because he's probably already been talking with his people for days and knowing Bill, he already has a mostly firm idea of what the 53 is going to look like, unless something dramatic happens.

Belichick always lets players go early. Obviously, he needs to keep enough scrubs to play the 4th game. Some players would be shown off, hoping for a low draft choice.

Can't think too many teams are willing to spend even a 6th or 7th rounder for a guy who'll probably have the choice between signing with them or bagging groceries in 2 weeks.

But what the heck, I never said I know everything.

I tend to agree. Weren't they talking about increasing the roster size if they went to 18 games?

We all know Belichick also likes to cut players who might catch on elsewhere as early as possible so I'm sure there are some impending cuts in his mind.

I don't believe BB "hates" this part of the job. It's just another box that needs to be checked on his way to sliding on another SB ring. He has no problem playing end of the roster roulette throughout the season shuffling around pieces. After 4 decades in the league, cut day is just a day on the calendar.

That being said....BB may hate cut day only because the league makes him do it

???

Belichick doesn't hate this. He is better at roster management than any other coach in the NFL.

"Imminent" as in they are absolutely going to happen. Not they going to happen tomorrow.

Ah, yes he does. He's said more than once it's the toughest part of his job, having to cut someone who gave his heart and soul. By his look and tone in those interviews, shaking his head, you know he doesn't like it.

Being great at roster management has nothing to do with the fact that sometimes cutting guys is hard. He's not a freaking robot, whatever you may think. He does his job well- that doesn't mean you enjoy every aspect of your job. BB is probably closer to all his players than just about any other hc. Why do I know this? Because he gets more involved in every positional drill than every other coach. He knows all these guys by name. I think he has more affinity for the scrappers, the end of the roster guys than other coaches. But he does his job well. Doesn't mean he enjoys every little part of it. I've been a boss, firing people is usually not easy. If it is,you're not a good boss.

No you don't get it, an EMT who is great at his job loves going to work @ the scene of a tragedy.

I caught up with Bill and asked him to clarify what he meant by imminent:

"We're just trying to do our best to communicate the best we can for our football team right now. Phil Simms was a particularly great communicator and when we played the Browns in '83..."

I don't know where some of these posters get their ideas from. As you stated in another post, fnord,he has often cut players early who had chances to catch on w. other teams. A cold-blooded "axeman" doesn't do stuff like that.
