Super Bowl Wins in 49 & 51 more impressive than 36, 38 & 39 ?

Just playing in a Super Bowl is an accomplishment...let alone winning one...or two...or...what the hell...five.
So, to me, they're all impressive.
But, as a long time fan, if you ask me to rank order the W's, here goes:

XXXVI. In my apartment, late at night, in the dark of winter, you can still hear the echoes of my scream as #4's kick split the uprights and the previously 5--11 Pats defeated the 14 point favorites from the Greatest Show on Turf.

LI. Greatest SB of all time. Greatest comeback of all time. Sealed Brady's legacy (if it needed sealing) as the G. O. A. T. and Belichick's as the Greatest HC of all time (if that needed sealing). This time, all you can hear in my apartment are the vestiges of my quietly croaked "**** me. **** me. You're ****ing kidding me," as White breaks the plane. Drained. In shock. All I could manage to say...OK...then I had some really good bourbon.

XLIX. Greatest SB finish of all time. Another scream into the night, this time out the window into the falling snow as one of my kids came home from an SB Party (I couldn't go because I can't watch these games surrounded by Jets and Giants fans down here in NYC), "Patriots! Patriots!"

XXXVIII. Weird game. They should have won it by a lot more but it was like everybody was in slow motion or a fog. Thank god, again, for #4 under pressure, and for a dumb mistake by Special Teams on that kick off. More relief than anything else.

XXXIX. A game that should never have been close, but thank you Rodney for ending the suspense!

Great synopsis of what you (and many of us) went through ! SB 36, I'll never forget the 1-2 second feeling of shock Vinatieri's kick went through. It seemed like 30 seconds, but in reality, probably only 1-2 seconds. Then I screamed out a guttural scream. Amazing feeling.

38 and 39, those were amazing feelings as well, I give that SB 39 team more credit though, I believe they are the first team in history to win a SB after losing their starting cornerbacks and still win a SB. Both Ty Law and Tyrone Poole wound up on IR that year, Randal Gay (undrafted rookie FA) and Assante Samuel (2nd year player) replaced them.

49 was a feeling of vindication, after the whole Deflategate BS, as well as the whole "they haven't won since Spygate." So exciting, the incredible 4th quarter comeback vs the Legion of Boom, then the amazing defensive stand and the greatest defensive play in SB history.

SB 51- One word, Legendary.

36 had the best commentary though:

"I don't agree with what the Patriots are doing here. I would play for overtime" ...

... "What Tom Brady just did gives me goosebumps"
Madden during the last 2 SB wins would've been interesting. Collinsworth ruined SB 49 for me at the end when he sounded like his dog just died when Butler picked it off

purely as a game, 49 was the best game.

2 great teams just trading punches for 3 quarters.

you had the slow 1st quarter feeling out every SB has. Then the Pats and Seahawks just kept trading counter punches. Like the end of the 2nd quarter, Pats go get their typical last minute TD and Seattle answers in 30 seconds with a 4 play TD to match it. Was a great nail biter for all 60 minutes and capped off with the greatest defensive play in SB history.

About as close to a perfect game as you can get.

There were a few goodies in this past one, my personal favorite being, "oh that's a catch!"

Add in, "and he's INNN, that's 5 for Brady !"

yup, credit where its due. I hate Joe Buck and think he's the prime example of nepotism...but in SB51 he ditched the robotic monotone crap and really was as into a game as I can remember seeing him.

Thats the most excitement and emotion Ive seen from him in a game

I give the edge to 51 over 36 simply because I think Atlanta's coaching job was so far superior to Martz's that Atlanta was the superior opponent on the days in question.

In the NFCCG vs. the Eagles, the Rams faced a predominantly nickel D as they did against NE. Philly had the edge while St. Louis tried throwing into it. In the 2nd half, the Rams started running against it and the game turned. For whatever reason, Martz didn't do the same against NE. Also, the Rams seemed to have success against NE in the no huddle and probably should have gone to it much sooner and often.

Coaching is part of the team so the coaching mismatch tipped the scales in the Pats being the better team than St. Louis, despite the talent disparity.

Atlanta had almost as good of an offense as St. Louis and an outstanding defensive gameplan against a Gronkless offense. They came in red hot after obliterating Seattle and Green Bay. They were peaking at the perfect time. Brady and the D had to play perfect ball for the final 20 minutes...and they did.

Chris

not in the 4th quarter.

not in the 4th quarter.
.

As bad as Quinn's decision to pass was, the execution by the offense was even worse...Ryan simply could not allow himself to get sacked. And even then, the next pass got them back in FG range...except holding on Matthews.

Martz had 3.5 quarters of bad coaching. Quinn had a handful of plays, magnified only because the Pats pulled off the miracle. Nobody would have cared about Quinn's calls if the Pats lost, just like nobody is skewering Belichick for the pass to Bennett that was almost picked off because Beasley ultimately couldn't make the play.

Chris

As a reminder, before the 2001 season, the Sporting News judged the Patriots the least likely team to make the Super Bowl over the next five seasons.

Yep.

After Drew's injury and before Brady's first start, the great NFL columnist Dr. Z. released his NFL "power ratings". He had pretty much invented that concept at SI.

He had the Pats ranked as #31, of 31, and remarked "I don't know that they have the talent with which to win a game"

IMO, the only truly easy Super Bowl was 39 vs the Eagles.

The Pats D was spent in SB36 and the Stl offense was getting revved up. SB38 the Pats had to comeback to win kicking the 3 with 4 seconds left. Carolina had just score 2 TDs in the 4th quarter.

SB39 NE had a 10 point lead with 8:41 to go. The Eagles did not score a TD until 1:48 to go burning up almost 7 minutes down by 2 scores. Typical Andy Reid play calling and clock management. McNabb threw 3 INTS and the Eagles lost 1 fumble. The Eagles never looked sharp to me.

The Pats didn't have to comeback in 38. It was tied at 29 when Brady took the field after that Kasey gaffe. Was like 1 min plus left.

I agree on the Eagles game. I never for one second thought they'd lose that game. That's the only one I felt that way

SB 49 was definitely impressive. I thought the game was over after Seattle went up ten.

SB 51 will always be the most amazing comeback ever. To be down 25 points, compuse yourself, rip apart that D at will was remarkable.

The foreplay leading to SB 36 with the Vinateri kick against Oakland was probably the greatest I have witnessed, then there was the final drive of that game which was unparalleled, I did not believe(in 2001) that they could accomplish that goal.. as a forever Pats Fan watching SB's 20 & 31 and all of the **** in between, made me think that this goal could never be achieved.

36 was completely out of character for the Pats and when I went to the Super Bowl Rally outside the Boston City Hall, it was a tad scary as never have I been in such a "well lubricated" large crowd.. it was intense.

IMO the drama of #36, #49 and #51 are all very exciting.. difficult to rate one over the other and great fun for a fan to watch.. but gotta go with #51 because it is the most recent, and is freshest in my mind. When I woke up on Feb. 6, 2017 I had to ask myself, "did that really happen"???? All five are really great wins..

I never thought that this team could be this good for this long, I am a very lucky fan.

The thread is about SB wins.

NE won SB38 with the late drive for 3 just like SB36.

Nobody knows for certain who would have won in either Super Bowl if the games went into OT. Harrison broke his arm in SB38, so I was happy to settle the game in regulation. Carolina had just scored 2 TDs or half their points in the 4th quarter which indicates to me that the NE D was tired.

Yup.

Though Im convinced if SB36 goes to overtime the Rams win. The tide had fully turned in that game, they just ran out of time.

But thankfully we have Brady and Bill and never had to find out

Which is why NE didn't play for OT. Bill knew his defense was fried.
