Malcolm Butler: Top 20 CB of All Time?

Holy crap, what a ****ty list.

Don't know about top 10 for Ty Law, since i didn't see him, but Revis was the definition of a shutdown corner. He was the best I've seen and deserving to be in the top 10 (Specially if Sherman is in there...)

Gil's been around awhile. Don't agree with his ratings but dude has a ton of knowledge going through that head of his. Apparently too much to retain when it came to his list

I find him to be one of the best story tellers of old school football I've ever heard. Racial barriers, scouting schools that dont exist anymore, players and coaches with two jobs in offseason, locker room stories and picking players out of his head who played 50 years ago at random

I'm going to enjoy him while he is here.

That Law should be higher? Not sure what you're responding to
Just the opposite. Sorry if my brevity created confusion. Butler needs a few years of outstanding play to even be considered.

Help me out here.

Charles Woodson is the third greatest corner of all time and was voted first team All Pro three times.

Darrelle Revis is the sixteenth greatest cornerback of all time. He was voted first team All Pro four times.

All four times Revis was voted first team All Pro, Charles Woodson was active in the NFL. (I may be wrong, Woodson may have retired before the last one, but still.)

Someone please square this circle for me because I can't.

(Real talk: Revis is a top-5 corner all time and Woodson is one of the most overrated players in league history, even if he does probably deserve to be a Hall of Famer. He isn't even the best Raiders corner of the 21st century, and the fact Nnamdi doesn't appear on this list despite being an historically dominant corner for a short period is a sure signal of recency bias because he would have been listed as a top 10 corner of all time five years ago.)

Ty Law may or may not be where he deserves, but honestly at this point I'd put even Asante above Butler in all time rankings (and that's not an insult to Butler.)

#26 is Zeke Elliott. I know. Crazy. Brandt is pretty much a Cowboys honk.

Butler barely cracked the stupid top 100 list (#99) made by the players. He's been a great story, and I hope he somehow manages to stay around a long time, but putting him in the top 20 of all time when he's only been starting 2 years is certainly questionable.

That said, he's got a lot of heart and potential, so he may end up eventually making a case for himself if things work out right. He has that SB clinching INT on his resume, and that certainly counts for something. I'd probably have Haynes and Law on the top 20 list, though. I think they both deserve it.

That's awfully generous of Gil for that ranking - and a bit premature. Does any player with 2 years of starter experience deserve to be ranked up near, or ahead of, Hall of Famers?

Swap out Lester Hayes for Sherman and the top 10 seems about right.

In the offseason writers need to justify their salaries.. so why not write an article about the best positional players.. if nothing else it pisses people off, the measure of success for today's media pundits...

You really do not know how good Night Train Lane and Willie Brown etc. are today as the game and and how DB's play the game have changed immensely over time.. the game that is played in 2017 is completely different than the game played in the 60's... a better comparison might be to do it by decades.

Revis and Law deserve to be higher.. but nice to see Haynes get the attention he deserves.

I hated the f...ing Raiders especially after the career ending blow by Jack Tatum, I believe that Hayes was part of that team.. remember all the gobs of stickum he had on his hands???

I agree.

Raiders were a despicable bunch back then but they won. I hated those bastards.

Stick 'Em Hayes cheated to be sure. However...for 7 years he was an elite CB. He could play any style.

It's a travesty he is not in the HoF

I remember the way Hayes and Haynes frustrated Theisman when the Raiders beat the Redskins in the SB. In the second half the receivers just quit tunning their routes.

He frustrated a lot of QBs in his day.

Exactamundo!!!
We turn over rocks looking for the slightest hint of disrespect and then post endless threads about how insulted we are, when the real disrespect is the insult to our intelligence that nearly all of these mediots represent by the simple fact of their existence.
So if one of them finally errs on the side of being a little over enthusiastic in his assessment of one of our guys, why should we even give a ****? What difference does it make? Why do we care?

Totally agree about the mediots.

However, I do care about the fans' points of view. There were some Pats fans here who were perfectly willing to let Butler go for just a draft pick. That was incredible to me.

Im convinced articles like this are written to drive the price of free agents up for teams

Love me some Butler, but lets slow the **** down on stating hes one of the greatest of all time after only 3 seasons

There are fans here who are willing to let Brady go for a draft pick or two. Members of the media don't have a monopoly on idiocy.

I didn't bother to read any of Blandt's slandts. They're all meaningless. I see many great lists here every season.

It's way too early to put Butler in any 'all time' list. He has really only played two seasons, but his introduction in SB49 and his two whole seasons were out*******standing. He was the top player on a defense that was first in scoring in the NFL and won a SB last year.
