Gronk has a new deal

Hogan, Amendola, Edelman, Cooks, and Gronk. This offense is going to be freaking ridiculous.
I'm almost scared to witness the destruction the 2017-2018 Patriots will display on the field towards the teams they face. Lets hope they drop a 50 burger on the Jests homefield!

The Patriots are a different offense when Gronk is on the field. And if I understand the deal correctly this is a win for the Patriots. It basically means they'll PAY! Gronk like the stark difference maker he is if he can stay on the field. OTOH if he is unable to stay on the field then -- depending on the duration of his remaining healthy -- the Patriots will pay what he was already going to make.

And this is most definitely a win for Gronk. He is going to make what he was going to make no matter his health status. But if he stays healthy/on the field for the whole season he gets a major upgrade in pay.

With that said one can't help but be concerned for Gronk. I can't remember the last time he played a full 16 and at least two of the injuries that sidelined him were of the very serious kind (arm, back). I don't know what goes into an NFL player when they start considering 'no mas' but it seems like a third serious injury would have to make Gronk wondering about 'no mas'.

For the record though, he's definitely had much more than 2 serious injuries. He's had 9 surgeries since his final year at Arizona, which include 3 back surgeries, an ACL surgery on his knee, 4 arm surgeries, and 1 to his ankle.

Two quotes explaining the opportunity to make this deal:

Howe:
The player and the Patriots initially showed interest last season in reworking his contract, but the timing of this agreement makes more sense. Last season, the Patriots didn’t have much of an incentive to give Gronkowski an outright raise aside from simply keeping him happy.

Now, however, because Gronkowski is coming off an injury-shortened season that affected his statistical production, the Patriots were in position to strategically restructure his pact. The Patriots set a series of statistical tiers for Gronkowski to reach to earn new money. If he doesn’t hit those benchmarks, the Patriots’ salary cap won’t be adversely impacted because the new incentives are labeled “Not Likely to Be Earned.” They’re under that designation because the statistics exceed his production from 2016 when he had 25 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns.

Duffy:
It's conceivable that Gronkowski plays most of the 2017 season, and plays well, but still cannot hit the statistical incentives. Hence the All-Pro marker in this agreement. If Gronkowski is still viewed by voters as the league's premier tight end, then the stats won't necessarily matter.

BTW - from Miguel's blog about the deal:
Patscap breaks down Rob Gronkowski’s restructure

What happens to the Patriots salary cap if Gronk is an All-Pro in 2017?
The Patriots 2018 adjusted cap number will be debited $5.5M.

(paranoics: mediots vote for Gronk regardless to hurt Pats 2018 cap)

ps

Compromise it is. Team friendly would include 2018-19 restructure. Player-friendly would include some new guarantees.

And White, Lewis and Mitchell. Brady will be able to close his eyes and throw it wherever he wants. It's likely to hit a top-tier receiver.

How come James White isn't getting his due? He was the man in the Super Bowl.

Cooks?? I agree with what looks like a wealth of riches...

I think that White and Butler are on the "honey do " list.....

Perhaps it is my view from behind these rosey Patriots glasses, but the Pats were criticized for "underpaying" him.

Don't Forget TE Dwayne Allen he's better RZ threat than M. Bennett... Allen can be a TD machine paired with the GOAT of TE's.

This is a great deal for the Patriots. If Gronk is on the field he is the most dominant non-QB player in this era and will easily earn that salary. We won the SB without him and we're a much better team with him on the field.

Probably on the borderline of what is and isn't SFW.

When I read "Gronk has a new deal" I immediately thought jello wrestling or sneakers.

White got paid ( Here are the contract extension details for Patriots RB James White ).

Thank you. This one slipped right by me this Spring. A lot of guys have flourished under Belichick, but James White is special. I'm glad the Patriots are taking care of their younger veterans. He started out as a RB that would crater on the first touch when he was a rookie. He's become a warrior and such a solid option out of the backfield along with Lewis.

I worried that Kevin Faulk would be hard to replace. Vereen did a decent job, but having White and Lewis as options to be chased by linebackers makes the Pats offense so incredibly flexible at any down and distance.

i've said this before, but i really wish the pats could work out something similar with Garappolo.

give him a decent base say 6-7 mil, and if for some reason he has to play he makes starter money.

I think this season will tell a lot about his future with the team, since I believe that there's a buyout clause/team option decision that needs to be made next spring for the remaining two years of the deal. If he stays healthy, it could mean an extension. If he gets injured again, it could make them think twice.

The option was after 2015.

Love it - sends a good message to the team. Probably helps the Butler situation, too (and I want him to stay - love the guy). The Pats have quietly stabilized their team for years to come. Incredible off-season.

Can't agree on the blocking. Allen is a good and willing blocker. So was Bennett.

As to the "better person" remark...that's a helluva thing to say since you don't know either of them.

Marty Bennett was a joy last year for Pats fans. Dancing with the cheerleaders...I miss him already and wish him nothing but good fortune.

Marty and his daughter on Instagram really warmed my heart (sorry it sounds cheesy, but it really was great to see!). Dwayne seems like a good dude too, just can't say much about him yet. Marty seems like a great guy and an excellent father. Those children's books he writes can really make a great impression on a young kid.
