OT: Jason McCourty Signs with Cleveland

Probably not many teams were interested if he couldn't get a better contract. Maybe should have waited till camp injuries.

Cleveland did have a camp injury, one of their rookies messed up his knee. But yeah JMAC is on a prove it contract, but he doesnt have to relocate his family far if at all.

You joke, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Bill brings him on for insurance/competition at the right price. All we really did was (presumably) upgrade Logan Ryan. How confident are we really at the third CB spot? That will be the weakest link in what looks to be a very strong secondary.

This may be cliche, but I really don't want guys on my team who are okay with losing. The new regime in Cleveland is impressive. But nobody in their right mind thinks this team is making a playoff appearance in the next two years, let alone contending. Maybe he had no other offers? Hard to believe Bill wouldn't give him 6 million over 2 years. He's thrown that at two JAG RBs already.

You joke, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Bill brings him on for insurance/competition at the right price. All we really did was (presumably) upgrade Logan Ryan. How confident are we really at the third CB spot? That will be the weakest link in what looks to be a very strong secondary.

I'll always take talent and Revis probably has a limited market so probably not out of the realm of possibilities. However I am very confident in the third CB spot mainly because when your top 2 corners are as good as ours you can role coverage and assign double teams in all types of unique ways.

Not sure how much of a "prove-it" deal it really is. Like Devin (obviously), Jason will turn 30 in the middle of training camp. He'll be approaching age 32 when this contract runs out at the end of 2018.

Jason has played almost exclusively zone coverage for his entire college and pro careers. The Pats play primarily man/press-man, so Jason wouldn't be a good fit.

Jason will also turn 30 in the middle of training camp. The transition from playing zone to playing man is difficult enough for younger players (e.g., Devin during his second season in the league). Giving an older player a two-year contract when it might take him a year or more to make a successful transition to a completely different type of coverage scheme (if he was even willing to try it) doesn't make sense to me.

At this point, the top six DBs (accounting for dime as well as nickel) appear to be:

CB - Butler/Gilmore + Rowe (nickel/dime)
SAF - McCourty/Chung + Harmon (nickel/dime)

The incumbent reserves are:
CB - Coleman, Cy Jones (Jon Jones appears to be ST-only at this point)
SAF - Richards (King is definitely ST-only)

Revis, a career LCB, likely would replace Butler as the LCB starter, and it's questionable (to me) that either Butler (or Revis) would be superior to either Rowe (or Gilmore) covering the slot in the nickel or dime packages.

OTOH, if Revis is serious about converting to Safety, he could possibly supplant Chung as a starter. However, that would be replacing a 30-year-old career safety with a 32-year-old "trainee".

They are building a good football team. They may still have some growing pains but they are building from the trenches out and making some smart pickups.

What's unique on their defense is that they have a freak of nature on every level: Garrett off the line at DE, Collins at LB, and Peppers back at Safety.

Those are three players whose talents I'm a huge fan of. It'd really be shameful for Cleveland to find a way to screw this up.

He might have, but probably not a lot better. I think maybe the market for zone corners has been shrinking over the past 3-4 years.

I think you're right about the family considerations. Cleveland to Nashville non-stop is about a 40-minute flight. I could see him turning down another million or so from a west or east coast team for that convenience alone, especially if the $$ difference was mostly incentives. He's already earned at least $36M from his time with the Titans, and probably got another million or so guaranteed from the Browns. Money may not have been his top priority for what might be his last NFL contract.

Then, too, Gregg Williams is the new DC for the Browns and was assistant DC for the Titans in 2013, so Jason has worked with him before. Cleveland's defense has flat out sucked for the past two seasons. Williams probably won't be turning it into a SB-caliber squad overnight, but he'll certainly make it more, um, "exciting" over the next couple of seasons, and the Browns have loaded up on defensive players this off-season. So, that might have been another attraction for Jason, even if he did receive somewhat better offers elsewhere.

You're crazy if you think present day Revis would be replacing present day Butler as a starter.
