As a Saints fan, I hate all things Falcons, but this article had me laughing. Only the Falcons could "embrace" this. Well maybe the Jets as well for you guys. Hope you enjoy this read as much as I did.

Atlanta Falcons' motto for 2017: 'Embrace the suck'

You don’t just shake off a game like Super Bowl LI if you’re the Atlanta Falcons. You don’t just look at that collapse, losing a game that you were leading, yes, 28-3 in the third quarter, and think, “oh well! We’ll get ’em next time!” If you’re the Atlanta Falcons, you’ve got two options: curl up in a fetal position, or embrace the suck.

The latter is the motto Falcons head coach Dan Quinn will preach for the rest of 2017. Falcons players arriving for rookie mini-camp and OTAs are getting wristbands with EMBRACE THE SUCK imprinted on them. Accept the pain. Steer into the skid. Or, as Quinn puts it: “Eat a crap sandwich with a smile.”

Good idea, bad presentation.

At its core it seems like this is about accepting what happened and moving forward which is, you know, the best way to handle any kind of defeat or tragedy. No different than when Belichick buried the football. Or 'We're on to Cincinnati'.

"Embrace the Suck" just seems like the worst way to term it.

Wait. This has to be a joke, right? Sorry, my sarcasm meter is tired. This article is an Onion-like parody, right?

Sadly, no. You may be forgiven for thinking that, but it's another Falcons trait, apparently, right up there with snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

"Embrace the Suck" is a phrase that gets thrown around military circles; but it's USUALLY in one of two contexts. In one case, it could be about accepting the fact the Army sucks and you have to get through it until you ETS (end time in service). I don't think that's what he's going for here.

In the other case, it's about accepting the pain and agony that comes from constant training to be the best at what we do, seeing the "suck" of misery as an essential part of the process of rounding into a worthwhile soldier/paratrooper/Ranger/etc. It's about looking forward when suffering.

What Quinn is peddling here is looking backwards and letting a crushing defeat define them. Wrong message...

I'm gonna bet that the falcons will be 1 and done if they do make the playoffs next year. Why? Because the superbowl loss is clearly still too overwhelming for them. The Pats broke the falcons. There is gonna be a massive cloud during every falcons game. Their opponents will know it. And they'll have a new OC.

They will lose to the Packers, Seattle, Cowboys and Pats. Then a couple of division games. I guess they could still win the division at 10-6 cos the other teams in the division suck.

Very informative post, Nikolai. From what I understand though, Quinn first brought this phrase up last offseason, so the SB loss isn't necessarily the sole reason behind it. If he's simply continuing that type of military mindset, then it's much more understandable.

In the end, they can come up with whatever phrase they want and the Pats still have to go out and beat them on the football field. With the addition of Dontari Poe, the return of CB1 Desmond Trufant, and the expected second year continuation of that pain in the ass LB (Jones, maybe?), their defense should be improved from last year's SB contenders.

That SB loss was cataclysmic. Thank God that hasn't happened to us.

It's one thing to lose in the final moments. We've seen our share of those.

To be up that big and collapse like THAT. You never get over it. Ever.

Clearly ATL has the talent. What we don't know is the mental toughness to overcome what happened to them.

What I absolutely know is their coach talking about it constantly does not help. Acknowledge it and move on.

We know they need to fully feel the disappointment as a group before they can move on; anything lingering will drag on their ability to bounce from it. This will be a test of his coaching ability unlike anything most NFL coaches every face. He's got to sense the team's mood and make the right moves at the right time. When to stop talking about it will be something that can only be sensed from inside the locker room.
