DL & EDGE Players: Run stuffers, designated pass rushers, hybrids, etc

Working on Phillips, Biegel, and Gilbert next, as time permits. Interesting group with lots of potential, but I'm having a real trouble figuring out where to grade them.

I'd also like to get some work done on Ifeadi Odenigbo. Intriguing late round guy.

Spoiler alert: Making my way through Odenigbo tape. Wow! I'm blown away. How is this guy so under the radar? He's the 26th DE on nfldraftscout. Double-digit sacks this year. Almost identical size and testing numbers to Tarell Basham, but against far better level of competition. Better numbers than Sheard. Really powerful player. Had 4 sacks against Iowa this year, and they're a well-coached OL unit.

Just watched the Iowa and Indiana games. Very nice find, he's got quite the bullrush and although he's hardly a speed rusher, he isn't limited to the bullrush. Very impressive and, I think, just the type of DE BB would like.

If he's there at 72, I'd still be inclined to take him. Basham has something about him I don't see with other rushers at this point of the draft - a combination of athleticism, length and power. He might not be elite at any of the three but he combines all three better than anyone outside the first round (and I'm seriously tempted to say better than anyone not named Myles Garrett).

Rob Havenstein? So, this must be from 2014? (Unless it's a different Havenstein playing OT for Wisconsin). If so, even more impressive to walk him back like that since Havenstein is 6'8" and weighs a gazillion pounds. And Odenigbo would've been a sophomore at the time.

Despite double digit sacks in last season of college, including a two-game stretch with 6 sacks, Oednigbo receives very little press. He has the 2nd most career sacks in Northwestern history, and was the Big 10 sack leader in 2016. While not the biggest at 6’3 260, Odenigbo displays outstanding play strength that belies his size. Mostly a pass rush specialist in the past, he played full time in 2016 and improved his all around game. He doesn’t give up any ground at all against the run, although he struggled in previous years, leading many to write him off as a part time player. Posted best pressure rate in Big 10 this year (per PFF, so . . . might be worthless).

When reviewing my game notes, I found an emerging theme of recurring words and phrases: “tree stump,” “violent,” “dominating,” “sturdy,” “overwhelming power,” etc. Strong punch to put tackle off balance, and often follows it up with a jerk or pull on the jersey when the tackle tries to regain equilibrium. Used occasionally as a standup blitzer from inside linebacker, or sometimes will reduce to 3-tech. Aggressive player who thrives on contact. Seems tough and mentally engaged at all times.

Extremely underrated player with solid traits and production — not a lot separating Odenigbo from the better known names in this class. Great in interviews, with an engaged, humble, and focused style of communication. Seems to have the drive and demeanor to be a reliable, responsible pro football player. Comes across as a mature, intelligent individual. Locker room leader. Well respected within the program. It’s worth noting that he weighed in bigger and faster than Charles Harris, who is regarded as a speed rusher. Odenigbo has similar size and times to Basham, and his overall numbers compare favorably to Sheard and Long, and look largely superior to Ninkovich.


+ Strength to bull rush effectively with one arm
+ Excellent hand usage to disengage from blockers
+ Often double- or triple-teamed; hugely respected by opposing teams/coaches
+ Even when he does not make the play, he often collapses the pocket
+ Good penetration on stunts
+ Flashes a quick, efficient spin move
+ Generally aware (haha) of quarterback’s movements in the pocket and maintains rush lanes
+ Stays alert to rollouts, reverses, and screens
+ Got the better of Kittle once
+ Possesses the strength to tear down a runner or quarterback with one arm


- Needs more awareness getting hands into throwing lanes
- Not always a secure tackler
- Could improve angles to the ball
- Almost no experience dropping into zones
- Not a flashy “dynamic” athlete on the edge (for those looking for a Ware or Miller type)
- Could improve playing balance
- Needs to diversify pass rush arsenal
- Arms don’t quite make the magical 33” cutoff for those who care (not me)
- Late bloomer; lacks extensive playing experience; may be a flash in the pan

Good work to defeat the block on the edge, but whiffed on the tackle. Needs to improve finishing the play.



Top notch play against the run. Avoids the first block, stacks the second block, and still makes the tackle for a loss. Really solid work. I imagine this sequence would bring a small tear to Belichick’s eye.



What I love about this sack is that Odenigbo has completely convinced the tackle that he’s going to bull-rush again, and then the tackle is left ducking his head at empty air when Odenigbo turns upfield. Although he’s primarily a physical bull-rusher, Odenigbo possess the playspeed to get outside and turn the edge on a tackle.

Yeah, he's one of my favourites for a 5-tech/3-tech role as well as LDE. I think (though I need to re-watch both) I give him the edge over Wise.

Wise has more potential. Cox is unequivocally the better football player.

Interesting. I see it the other way around although I could be persuaded. Still have yet to fully get on board with Wise, although There are elements I like. Will have to take another look.

According to testing numbers, Wise is bigger, more agile, more explosive, etc. He was also more productive. He just gets stuck on blocks too much, even though there are moments when I really like him. But when I watch Cox, I see a tenacity and meanness that I think serves him better on the field. He's got the grit and determination to make plays work, and he's got a reputation as a leader. Plus he's a hellacious blocker at fullback, if the DLine doesn't pan out.

Cox, to me, has a very powerful physical and mean game, that will struggle from a lack of bend and agility.

I think I would be prefer someone with a bit more athleticism to him, but in a somewhat similar fashion to Spikes, can see why BB would be interested. Having coached his dad probably has some positives and negatives hahaha

It's funny how Watt had great production, an incredible Combine, and two brothers who play in the NFL (one at an absurdly high level), and yet everyone is hesitant to rank him higher. Something about him screams serviceable, not superstar. I'm just as guilty as the rest.
