Sincere question. Is it possible that the Saints don't give him enough and he just doesn't go? That would free BB from any "deal" he may have made.. Man wouldn't that be like just like the Godfather level GM work.

EDIT: I supposed he could still trade him at 3.9mil to SP

Exactly 0.0%

I would love him to stay, but he is either dead set on shooting his way out, or his agent is leading him around by his foreskin.

It's really too bad for the Pats either way...unless we get the 11 then it would be just a little less bad!

It's certainly possible, but with all the talk, seems highly unlikely now.

While I think the odds are pretty high. I don't believe it's near 0%.

Here's why.

Why would Butler's agent agree to any deal that is not at least = to AJ Bouye ($26m) or near what Gilmore ($40m) got in terms of guaranteed $$$?

Is he going to get that from the Saints? I think there's a chance given their current cap situation that doesn't happen. People keep talking about the $13m/year stuff.. but it's really about the guaranteed $$$.

Butler's agent would be negligent agreeing to any deal that doesn't have more than $26m in guarantees.

Yeah it's definitely possible.

Well he gets 3.9 mill this season if he doesn't get a new deal. So he doesn't have that much leverage.

A chance, yes, but a very thin one at this point. It'd be fine with me, though, unless we're talking about 11, which BB could (would) parley into two or three lower picks.

Right he get's that $3.9mill and then can break the bank as an UFA like Gilmore and Boyoue. Which would lock him into $30mill+ in guaranteed money if he continues to play at a high level and not get hurt.

A fair chance.. Maybe fifteen percent.

Maybe they trade and get peppers from Michigan..

it all depends on the Cooks thing.. if it is part of the Cooks thing then it is about whether you would rather have Butler than Cooks. There is a year difference in how long you the player under control. I don't know.

I could still see him staying. That first round tender helps us and gives us leverage. Depends on how bad the Saints, or anyone else, wants him. Plus, the Pats still have a chance to match any deals, which they could. Maybe they are playing hardball and lowballing Butler to see what offer he gets to then go up and match if its reasonable. We still have cap room, I believe, to do so. I think its still good for both sides if Butler stays next year and plays for the $3.9 mil. Assuming he has a good year, then either he gets a big long term deal from NE or he goes to the free agent market and gets a huge deal as well.
