Reiss suggests the Pats might be concerned with Butler off the field

This article was NOT about the guy's agent - he already has been criticized, no need to tiptoe around that issue. This was a suggestion that there is something else - and the only "clue" was that he is single. What the heck does that mean? This article is a total piece of garbage, and Reiss should be ashamed of himself.

I'm actually really annoyed by that piece. I know he comes here now and then, and I'm sure looks at threads with his name on it, if so, for shame, Mike!

I mean really....the whole tone of it. The same paragraph, in scary italics, about off the field, repeated twice. All that's missing is the creepy "he's a bad guy" music. Lousy work there.

That article is pure crap. Lots of unsupported speculation and unnamed sources. It contradicts what we see with our eyes.

The fact is that the Patriots grade every player and assign a value based on position, need, and that grade. For whatever reason, there is a disconnect between the brain trust and the player. It happens. Now BB is 'doing what is best for the team' -- we don't yet know if that means nothing or trading Butler.

Let me get this straight. Because he's single in his mid 20s, he might be into some dirt?

Being single is the gateway. Hernandez was single at one point...eerie similarities. All major criminals are single at one point in their lives. Reiss may be onto something here.

Back during the Welker exit, I was convinced Reiss was acting as Bob Kraft's mouthpiece. BB and the Pats were taking a PR beating and Reiss had the intimate details of NE's mindset. A few weeks later, Bob Kraft spoke publicly sounding eerily similar to Reiss.
The Krafts' fourth son still in the loop?
Bingo. That's one example.

I don't think Bob was behind this though

Just thinking out loud here.

1. Reiss never writes this type of crap.
2. BB doesn't care about PR.
3. BB is pissed at Butler's agent.
4. BB uses Reiss to take a dump on Butler's agent or a shot across his bow.

Btw: Reiss is taking the heat for that article in the Twitterverse.

Basically it is "26 and married with two children" vs. "27 and single".

Wow. I pray the Pats organization isn't behind that attempt at innuendo.

Yeah. Reiss should have either put in "Sources near the team say..." (if they did) or give some other basis for his speculation. It's unfair to Butler to throw out something like that as an "I'm just thinking" piece.

That said, I very much doubt this is an "I'm just thinking..." piece. Reiss was either fed something from the team, heard something from players or other reporters, or witnessed something himself and for whatever reason is not willing to say that.

What a terrible article. His worst EVER by far. But lets continue. He speculates "what could it be" and unnecessarily so purposely throws a "single" Butler and a "Married" Gilmore. Implications of which, that these might be some of bad or good you get with players BB quoted once a time long ago.

It doesn't even make sense. He's just cherry picking parts to support some foregone conclusion of a theory.

Each step of the way, there are dozens of other conclusions equally likely, but he chooses the ones that furthers the plot. Our minds swirling, he continues until the final shocker, is it bc/Butler is single? WTF does that even mean haha. If this was anything but a fantasy this is when he would of said, something like "and rumors of possible grumblings questioning his maturity", or, just as likely, "and there is much jealously among the married players, in just how much tail he gets". But no, he spouts some vague quote from BB about the good and bad, and how it's keeping him up at night, pondering it's implications.

Terrible. Just terrible.

However I don't think he throws shade. Mostly, because without context, both marital situations are character neutral! The logical conclusion for readers is going to be, WTF are you talking about? That is the conclusion you came up with? I think he's the one that will take more heat from this than Butler.

Giving the benefit of the doubt to Reiss that seems to be at least an incomplete piece. So you either spill the beans completely or don't put this crap out there trying to smear the player.

I dont want to believe he's been completely espnized.

Also, at 27 and rich the right decision is to be single not married.

The single thing, I think he was just suggesting that Gilmore has a more stable home life in terms of going out at night, etc. In fact, Bedard basically verified that yesterday :

Obviously I don't know what Butler does in his off hours but I think that was what he was suggesting, not other things.

Single. So is he hanging out at strip clubs? Does he have multiple girl friends whose constant fighting is distracting Butler's game? Goes straight from practice to bars scoping chicks? C'mon, give us the dope.
The only off field activity that I notice Butler doing is national commercials. Good for him. No, make that great. Now, aside Brady and Gronk, the only other Patriot visible nationally is MB. Could that make Kraft and BB visibly nervous? Who knows? Obviously, Reiss has been asked to sow seeds of disinformation into the public's perception of Butler.

Likely a case of the Pats - Krafty Jonathan I'm guessing - throwing something out to Reiss and Reiss running with it. Reiss carrying the Krafts water again.

Once a team starts poisoning the waters around a player who "may" be on the way, you know that player's gone. Sucks, too. Butler's a damn good player and I'd love to know wtf is the team's rationale for not signing him....

Well if Butler stays, the days of Reiss interviewing Butler are likely over.

I interpreted "off the field" to mean his agent... that comes under that category. They almost had a deal last year, now this rookie agent is pumping up Butler's head with dollar signs and acting as if the player is a UFA. I think the team just doesn't want to deal with representation who doesn't understand the written and unwritten rules of the league..

How do you get that? He directly attributes to Butler. Because he "single". Although nothing points to anything but a salary dispute, or that BB picked anyone over anyone, Reiss can't shake the feeling that if butler had just settled down and found a nice girl, it'd all be over by now.

Maybe it would. His wife would smack him in the head and say are u insane take a 2 yr now at 8per.
