Patriots sign Rex Burkhead

If he stays healthy, the Pats RBBC backfield is going to be dynamic......Run or pass ??

Defenses won't know how to line up and TB will check into the right play for their alignment.....

Gonna be a fun season on the Patriot's run to the playoffs.....

Can't Wait !!

College carries mean nothing to me. There are 1000s of RBs who are were bellcow Rbs in college who for whatever reason became 3rd down or situational 2nd string RBs in the pros. You know that.

No. What I know is that there are 1000s of RB in College who never make it into the NFL. What I know is that there are plenty of players who aren't Burkhead's size who don't do squat with the talent they have.. Burkhead has made it a point to be a team player by playing special teams in Cincy. He was in a crappy situation in Cincy where Marvin Lewis insisted on going with his primary 2 backs and not giving Burkhead a chance until he absolutely had to. The chance that Burkhead DID get this year, he made the most of against a fairly stout Baltimore run defense. Most people would call Burkhead's game against Baltimore a "Break out" game..

Burkhead had 2 games against Baltimore
5-29 yards (5.8)
27 - 119 yards (4.4)

College carries show the ABILITY to handle a large load. The fact that he's successful running between the tackles at this level, shows that he's not a "3rd down or situational 2nd string" back.

He didn't lose that ability just because he was behind Hill and Bernard..

I dont think I'm holding anything against him per se but I am reserved in stating that BB is singing this guy specifically as replacing Blount's 1100 yards and 299 carries.

There is being reserved and then there is what you are saying.. Which is that you doubt he'll break 150 carries, never mind 200..

The most anyone has said is that they expected 250 carries out of Burkhead. I could actually see that though I believe it will be less because I believe that Lewis is the #1 back currently. Lewis has yet to have a full healthy season. I believe that Lewis and Burkhead give the Pats a great tandem and a great 3 headed monster with White.

As I and others have stated, Burkhead is very good between the tackles and particularly the "A" Gaps. At least he was with Cincy.

I don't get the Woodhead comparison at all.

It's about the attitude and willingness to do whatever the team needs.. The sort of Non-Tangible characteristics that people like myself mention to people like CaptainStone and other GM wannabees who rely only on websites for their information about players and refuse to acknowledge that there are things that BB sees / gets a handle on during the interviews with players.

How long is the pact?
Im cautiously optimistic however if Mccafrey tumbles in the draft

OK

I was referring to the physiological characteristics.

Rex is a bigger dude.

Belichick is gonna turn this guy into a star.

19-0. Book it.

Here some articles about Rex:

quote:

There is plenty to like about Burkhead if you are a Broncos fan. He is a slasher of a runner, but is not afraid to mix it up and become a physical back at the point of impact. One of the knocks on Burkhead since coming out of college has been his pass protection. He has all but eliminated the doubt there and added that as a strength.

He is a slasher, but also shifty out of the backfield.

____

here from a visionary Cincy poster a month ago:

he reminds me of Endelman and Amandola, kinda undersized shifty white dude who can ball. The Pats use their guys in all kinds of ways. The Bengals let Burkhead sit his entire rookie contract. Right there is the glaring difference between the two teams..

Any idea for how much?? I like the signing. Wouldnt mind a 3 headed monster of rex/dion/white early on in games with blount or big bodied draft pick to closeout the game.

My view on Rex is that at worst BB sees him as a solid STer and part time RB and at best is a 150 carry guy.

I agree on your scouting report. Hes a tough runner and will do well here.

I just don't buy that BB thinks he will do it at scale.

Seems like a good fit. Young, multi dimensional power/pass catching. I'd step lightly if I were Bolden. Blount is still a beast, if available.

The signings on offense this year point to Belichick and McDaniels ramping up the speed of the offense ... will be fun to watch.

Shifty, white, can line up as a RB or WR pretty effectively. His last name is four letters followed by 'head'. I wouldn't look a whole lot further than that.

Hes a more powerful runner than Woody.

Thats 90% of the difference.

Plus hes white but I couldn't care less

Burkhead is a pretty solid inside/outside zone runner. The Pats don't really have anyone else like him. I like the signing. I'm sure McDaniels would love to run more inside/outside zone because the Pats are small on the interior of the OL. It would make Mason and Thuney more consistent run blockers with less necessity for double teams and combo blocks.

He'll be this year's Chris Hogan.

"Oh that guy was buried on Cincinnati's depth chart, of course Belichick brings him and becomes a 1000 total yard back (700 yard rusher and 400 yard receiver)

I like that white running back on the Lions, it would be hysterical if BB grabbed him as well.
