Butler case

I feel sorry for Butler. He worked his butt off and proved he is a #1 corner.
Yet, this seems like a slight (signing Gilmore for that much $$).

Butler deserves what Gilmore got... IMO

40 mil guaranted to Gillmore shows how much Pats value him. That top CB money. Evn if Butler asked little less than this, they sign Gilmore. BB knows both and their talent. My only concern is Gilmore character.

Butler's agent is out of his f**king depth and because of it Malcolm is paying for it to the tune of $600k last year and $3.9m this year. Wouldn't at all surprise me if this guy is looking for slightly more than Josh Norman got (5 years/$75m/$50m gtd) which is the biggest CB deal right now. I just get the feeling this guy really has no clue.
You are probably right. I forget about Josh Norman money. So Gilmore is basically a steal if he has right character.
Does someone has a link to article about how Pats called Butlers agent about his status as UFA. And Butler agent lied to them that few teams are interested in Butler, but no team was interested. So i dont believe anything that comes from Butlers camp.
I still like Butler and wish him best, but he is not worth Norman money. For that money he is covering Julio Jones in SB

If there's one thing that's a guaranteed, gold solid lock, it's this: when Malcolm's gone, we'll read a lot on here, and elsewhere, that he was overrated, greedy and largely sucked. Book it.

Maybe from the homer army. The reasonable people will just say that he and his inexperienced agent overplayed their hand and thought they can play poker with BB. This is a pure business decision and has nothing to do with Butler's skills...

You need to read and digest Ivan's post. My man Malcom's situation is NOT the same.
I wish him the best if he's not here but he needed to sign a discounted, year EARLY big money deal to make that happen.
They wanted to extend him last year so it was actually two years early. He should have taken a discount. In regards to others post if he wants to get paid.. he needs to go elsewhere.. that **** doesnt fly here. Even if they were offereing him 8 mil a year last year that would have been 12mil more than he he would have had by the end of this year. So if he is willing to wait another year he might wind up with 5-10 mil more over the life of his contract. Thats on him and for him to decide. It just wont be here.

He didn't say "haven't spoken to him in a year". He said "haven't spoken to him since last year". Big difference. Especially when a lawyer (who knows all about parsing words) says it. "Since last year" is as little as 9 weeks ago. (Still surprising if true, admittedly.)

I hate people that do that. I really don't want to think when someone else is talking.

Butler like so many of these guys seems to be getting piss poor advice from his "agent" and that may the the issue with all of this. While he makes some noise now, does not seem to have done his due diligence up to the new NFL year.

The best thing that the NFLPA could do for all draftees is to provide counsel to them about agents, and the type to avoid.

I am a huge Butler fan and love his story, but looks like his agent is incompetent. Why not sign the FA tender?? That is the best he will get right now..

FYI for anyone who doesn't know who Jason Chayut is, he was the thorn in Bill's side in '06 as he was Deion Branch's agent.
Not to be confused with Neil Chayet.

(Sorry. I mean Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeil Chayet.)

His agent said this on march 9th the first day of the nfl year. It could mean they hadnt talked since yesterday.

This should be the easiest contract situation in the NFL. Butler can negotiate with every team and sign a contract with any team that wants him. It's not the Patriots fault that the rules offer them a first round draft choice in return.

Whatever Butler receives on the "semi-open" is what he is worth. Why would the Patriots pay more? It's even possible (now very possible) the Patriots would think he's not worth the contract Butler would sign because a first rounder would have more value.

It's ridiculous that it's so simple.

He has two rings. If he's smart, he should now lock in as good as financial contract as possible. There are no guarantees in the NFL. Teams have no loyalties to players. Players need to look out for themselves. In the meanwhile, we thank him for his contributions and will never forget his winning play in the Seattle SB.

So I guess he hasn't signed his tender? Explains why he is still a Patriot. Hopefully he's not holding out at camp...

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Patriots are still shopping Malcolm Butler.

Bulter wasn't part of New England's package for Brandin Cooks, but the Saints "could consider a trade at a later date." The Patriots can't afford to extend Butler after signing Stephon Gilmore. A restricted free agent, Butler is set to make just $3.91 million in the final year of his contract.

This story actually intrigues me a little more than High at this point. What is going on here? There are so many rumors. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

He might as well have UHaul and ReMax on speed dial

Let him play out his contract, see what happens next year.

I hope BB doesn't settle for ten cents on the dollar or simply cut him out of spite.

Im still confused about this situation. Butler was happy to play for 300k this year but wont for 3.9million? I understand he is worth more than that but it is still a huge raise and in a year he is getting PAID by someone.

Seems like his agent is pushing for him to get paid a year early
