They keep their picks and can rid themselves of Glennon after a year without a boat anchor of a cap charge.I thought so too at first, but then I looked at the QB market.
In terms of average per year, Glennon's deal would make him the 24th-highest paid QB last year, just behind Kaepernick and Dalton, just ahead of Fitzpatrick and RGIII.
He hasn't played in a while, but his upside is more than any of those 4 guys at this point so why not roll the dice? If you're a team like Chicago and you're not contending for a Super Bowl berth this year, why wouldn't you see if you can test out Glennon and see if there's anything there? It seems like a lot of the guaranteed money will be in year 1, so it's not like this will strangle the franchise long-term.
Jimmy G is obviously a more intriguing prospect, but if you're the Bears, do you trade this year's first and next year's as well for him, or do you use some of your $60M+ cap space on a decent QB with some potential upside, and draft two blue chippers, and potentially get to sign Jimmy as a free agent next year?

The question is....was it short-sighted as they are chicken to roll the dice on Jimmy or do they believe Glennon is better than Jimmy
I don't think they believe Glennon is better, but he cost a lot less when you factor in the draft compensation. We just saw Cleveland basically pay $16M to buy a 2nd round pick in the Osweiler deal. It was probably too much for that pick, but definitely not for the picks it might take to get Jimmy.
Plus I think Chicago thinks they still have a chance to sign Jimmy next year as a free agent. If nobody trades for him, or he doesn't sign a long term deal, they have homefield advantage in courting Jimmy as a free agent. No surprise, most of Glennon's guaranteed money is in year one.
Add it all up and it doesn't seem as crazy as it sounds.
Browns will give at least 3 picks for Jimmy...
Funny, I thought Bears would have tried for Jimmy. Glennon is a mistake. IMO.
His swarthy Italian good looks are just too much for Belichick to ~?~ say goodbye ~?~ to.
I would happy trade Jimmy G for #33 #52 this year and their first next year.
Is it because somehow, Glennon manages to make the ghost of Drew Bledsoe look like an athletic QB?It does make sense. I'm not impressed with Glennon
He really is stiff back there. Lamp posts have more mobilityIs it because somehow, Glennon manages to make the ghost of Drew Bledsoe look like an athletic QB?
Actually, it's Nord's poster.Fess up, bro. This is 'cause your wife has a Jimmy G shirtless poster.
Never trade the next Tom Brady
IF they keep him, they plan to franchise him next year. It's the only explanation.Keeping Jimmy is going to be a costly mistake if they lose him in 12 months. I don't think a year of insurance is worth losing a high first over and maybe more over.
Well, we know for a fact he'll be in a Patriots uniform next year, so what did you expect?Does it mean anything? This is the time where big moves happen and you are hearing about everything but the only rumor you haven't heard much of all week has been Jimmy G. It seems to be on the back burner with a deal out there no one is matching with no movement.
Just worth pointing out.
If he's not traded then bill believes he will be our next starting QB in the future. The browns have the picks but bill wants the first overral pick. I don't know what's wrong with taking number 12 and a future first rounder in 2018.
I'd happily do it even without the first next year.
