Pats considering Butler trade to Saints for Brandin Cooks

does he have to sign before 4?

I have no idea. Was trying to look it up but I can't find it. I assume if he doesn't sign he won't be paid the amount and he still owes his team the contracted year until he signs.

It's amazing how this thing's ending idk what to make of it.

I believe the actuals being tossed around is Butler + 1st rounder for Cooks plus 2nd rounder

Why on earth would BB do that?

Elite CBs are way more precious than Elite WRs... and Butler is a better player than Cooks IMO

I'd be against trading them straight up, but if the Saints are looking for our elite top 6 CB AND pick value, they can go **** themselves

It's like they think they have Jerry Rice, but he's the #2 or #3 WR on their own roster and isn't a huge, dominant monster of a weapon like a Julio Jones... and he's not as productive as Antonio Brown..

I mean, Cooks is a great WR, but he's far from the top 10 at his position.. Butler is absolutely top 10 at his, and I think you could make a good argument that he's top 5

Is 1 extra year on his deal really worth giving up 1st round value and falling back into the 2nd round? We'd also lose the 5th year option luxury of the 1st rounder

I was super pumped to read that we signed Gilmore, but it's bitter sweet now with all this talk of trading Butler.. if that happens and Hightower leaves, this is going to be a totally different defense next year which would stink... because the defense was a huge part of why we were so good last year

In BB I trust... I'll just need a brown paper bag and some Xanax to get thru free agency this year

Saints have to deal with the RFA tender and we get whatever that amount was (3.5m ?) back in terms of cap space. That's how it works out.
Nope. Both @Miguel and Mike Lombardi say Butler can't be traded until he signs some sort of contract with NE.

So Butler would work out a deal with NO, then he'd sign the NE tender, be traded to NO, then rip up the tender contract and sign the agreed-to deal.

can't pay 2 CB's #1 money ........ still have other positions to fill out

some roster turnover is a good thing.......Butler will get his money one way or another

why can't we pay both. Gronk is cheap next year, Brady is taking a lot less money, our D-Line is cheap and we have a good amount of picks (in addition to possible more with the Jimmy G trade)

In the past it was true that shutting down the slot killed this offense. That is no longer true. The team has adjusted its approach and have multiple players in JE11, MM, DA, Hogan, Gronk, etc who are all reliable, consistent targets for TB12 in and out of the slot.

I've stated in earlier posts that Cooks would be a nice addition but it would come a year early than is actually needed. With that said, that is BB's philosophy and that is fine.

There are precisely two position players on this offense who make the machine run. Gronk and Edelman. Gronk is not reliable. And we have shown we can win without Gronk. Just as in the Moss/Welker days, its the first-down machine that the Pats need in order for Brady's short passing game to open it up for those other complimentary pieces.

If Edelman goes, and Gronk goes - and both have a lot of wear on them, the offense runs through them, and Edelman is 30 now - the offense goes.

Not sure why you are bringing up solid CB2s when Malcolm is a CB1. Historically speaking, the team does better defensively with a shut-down CB1 as opposed to having 2 CB2s

In the end its a matter of what you believe is more valuable to NE at this time. a CB1 or a slot receiver where you already have a plethora of reliable targets TB12 can throw to

I was being unnecessarily unclear. For my purposes, Butler is a CB1 on the market. But on this team, for this discussion, he is CB2. CB1 was just signed for $14m a year for five years. Gilmore is now a permanent part of this defense, Butler's status is in the air.

I am pointing out that an elite slot receiver is probably more valuable to this team than an elite CB2.

I am gonna be disgusted if we give up number 32 for cooks. We gain 42. Think about it. The saints still have number 11 and 32 and they get butler. Too sweet for them.

That leaves the pats with 42, 64 and two 3rd rounders. They don't have a 4th rounder.

what are you even going on about?

They're giving away too much for cooks. That's my point. This ain't randy moss in his prime.

Is cooks that much better than butler? Butler has made big plays for this team.

Why would we do this? TB can make most receivers into great players. Cornerbacks? Not so much. Hope it isn't true.
I wrote this before the deal with the guy from Buffalo was announced, and it looks like rumors are really flying on this trade. I really like Bulter and hope it isn't true, but as someone said, this suddenly feels inevitable. Sigh. I hate the offseason. Just wake me up one day before camp starts & let me know who's on the team...
