Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

What would you call an upgrade. Give me a name
Not to worried about Blount either. Im a huge fan of his but despite his big season I dont think he is that special. Lacy would intrigue me. Maybe Latavius Murray. Lots of good backs in the draft as well. I think we will be okay at RB.

I really like this trade--getting a TE who can block and catch and is strong in the red zone by basically flipping a 4th for a 6th. Well done.

Half of Allens touchdowns last season came in 1 game against the Jets on that Monday Night debacle where the Colts ran them out of the building.

A couple of points noone has mentioned.

The Patriots traded the 4th round pick we had from Seahawks which was pick 122. This pick was going to be forfeited since we forfeit our highest 4th round pick. Our own pick is 128. So by trading this pick for 1 or 2 rounds down, we forfeit 128 instead of 122 and hence create value. The Colts now get to pick at 122. If we kept this pick it would have been forfeited. This is why it was smart to trade this pick and get some value for it.

Secondly, the Colts didn't make the playoffs and we get their 6th rd pick but it's in first half of 6th rd. So we drop from last pick of 4th to first half of 6th round.

Basically in terms of draft capital what we gave up is just a wash. We dropped 1 round and change from our last pick of 4th round pick.

So the deal should just be looked at in terms of the player, and the contract that comes in. We gave up practically nothing in draft capital. And, as has been reported, we get a good TE who is on $5m for each of 2017 and 2018. Forget the $7.5 for 2019. Either he restructures by then, or gets cut, or he's a superstar and we are happy to pay him that amount. This should be looked at as a $5m for 2017, and $5m for 2018.

This trade is amazing in every respect.

BB is a genius.

Nice post. One other thing to consider: the Seahawks 4th came from a package of late round draft picks from last year. One of those picks was #204 last year, which was the 6th rounder that came back to us with Bennett as part of our trade with Chicago.

#204 was packaged with a few other late picks for #147 with Miami. Then we turned around and traded #147 and #243 to Seattle for #225, plus this year's 4th rounder which is the pick we traded to the Colts. So Marty B lives on (kind of). Or rather, that original 4th we sent for him to Chicago still lives on.

I also think the gap in terms of talent differential between a 4th and 6th rounder is so tiny, BB knows that too, and is willing to coach that up. So to him, he still gets a pick where he'll get a comparable player, plus a player he wants. Win win.

I take it that you're not a fan of the trade. I wasn't either until i saw his contract details. They can cut him after next season if he sucks. Still can't believe he will make more than a guy like edelman.

The league takes our highest 4th round pick. We had Seahawks pick, 122, and our own pick, 128. We were set to forfeit 122 and then we'd have picked at 128. Instead we traded the Seahawks pick, which was 122, to the Colt. Now we forfeit 128 instead, our original 4th rounder lower down, and now we have no 4th round picks.

Thanks for the clarification, I was under the impression that they couldn't really move any of their 4ths, but luckily that was not the case!

If he can stay on the field then he is very good... it's a BIG if

I agree. He's had injury issues, but the talent is there.
Was it bad luck, or a trend?
Regardless BB likes his game.
I'm down.

Finally caught up in the thread, I probably should have just read it all the way thru before commenting lol.. people have made me feel better about this trade.. not as bad as I originally thought, they aren't on the hook for that much money and minimal dead money if they had to cut him loose.. it should help our running game and provide consistency at both TE positions for 2 years at least..

I hope he performs well and I'm really interested in seeing how he performs in the redzone for us... hopefully they draft a stud RB this year to take advantage of these 2 guys at TE

I would still love a tight end. Maybe they can that 4th round pick with the jimmy pick if he get's moved.
