Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

Malcolm Mitchell was a 4th-rounder…as was Trey Flowers.

This is a solid point, but you must agree one could also find 4th rounders that didn't pan out. A low 4th for an upper half 6th AND a player that will probably help you is a good call, I'd think. We'll see, but it's worth the risk IMO.

Incorrect. We just traded away our Seahawks (higher) pick.

The rule is we forfeit our highest 4th round pick. This is to stop us from acquiring a higher 4th round.

This was put in place after we picked Mayo at top of the draft (#10) in 2008 from a pick we acquired even though we were set to forfeit our own 1st round pick (#31)
That's what I said.

Question is when is this trade final?
What if we acquire another 4th rounder after the trade? Will they take that?

Sticky situation! (Chargers)

Inb4 someone lists every successful player drafted in the 4th in the last ten years.
We got a 6th back. I wonder if any of those have panned out lol

A young, cheap, fairly known quantity for sliding down ~40(?) picks. Easy money. Can't wait to go jumbo this season.

I feel much better about the trade now. If he sucks they could cut him after next season without much repercussion.

Give him the playbook and i hope he gets some early work with TFB!

He doesn't have the same size as Marty, but im okay with that, he can block, and thats very important for this team, he will get his catches here and there.

Why not bring back blount force trauma if we gonna have these blocking tight ends.

Everyone is gonna love this move come October.

Rex Burkhead, Samaje perine, Eddie lacy
Not trying to discredit anything Blount accomplished here, but we can do better.

You wanna make a bet this guy doesn't even come close to what an injured bennett did production wise. I know bennett wasn't coming back. Why not just draft a tight end. The value's immensely different. I feel he's a waste of cap space. It's a done deal. Gave up a fourth round where you can still get some value at a cheap price.

Sometimes I feel Like you don't even watch football.

When you take all things into consideration, Bennetts stats aren't that far off from Allens in 2016.

Both played with nagging injuries (both ankles), and Allen often got "shut down" in the second half of games once their season was essentially over

Allen was splitting targets with another tight end, which Bennett was not for most of the season, in a offense that throws to WR's much more then tight ends. Not to mention on a very lac-luster team with a QB who plays Favorites.

When you take that into consideration, those 20 less catches, and 300 less yards, and ONLY 1 less TD, really doesn't seem all that different. (both had 3td games against horrible teams)

Like Honestly, thats before you consider he's going to cost almost a cool million less then Bennett made last year, THIS year, and about half of what Bennett is looking to make this year, Oh, and he's 3.5 years younger on top of it, with a very bargain contract remaining, that takes him into his almost 30's.

And lastly, we traded a 5th round pick for A.J Derby last year, and id take Allen over Derby any day of the year, and we could potentially receive up to a 4th as a comp pick by having Bennett walk this year. Also to note, Derby was a 6th round pick, something we just got, and something we upgraded upon.

At this point, this trade is looking great, and Im feeling like in the end, not a sole will regret it. I don't see how you're so negative or at ends with it.

A couple of points noone has mentioned.

The Patriots traded the 4th round pick we had from Seahawks which was pick 122. This pick was going to be forfeited since we forfeit our highest 4th round pick. Our own pick is 128. So by trading this pick for 1 or 2 rounds down, we forfeit 128 instead of 122 and hence create value. The Colts now get to pick at 122. If we kept this pick it would have been forfeited. This is why it was smart to trade this pick and get some value for it.

Secondly, the Colts didn't make the playoffs and we get their 6th rd pick but it's in first half of 6th rd. So we drop from last pick of 4th to first half of 6th round.

Basically in terms of draft capital what we gave up is just a wash. We dropped 1 round and change from our last pick of 4th round pick.

So the deal should just be looked at in terms of the player, and the contract that comes in. We gave up practically nothing in draft capital. And, as has been reported, we get a good TE who is on $5m for each of 2017 and 2018. Forget the $7.5 for 2019. Either he restructures by then, or gets cut, or he's a superstar and we are happy to pay him that amount. This should be looked at as a $5m for 2017, and $5m for 2018.

This trade is amazing in every respect.

BB is a genius.

I wonder if BB calls Fraudger personally to let him know he's shoving his stupid defamegate BS right back up his ass.

"Hey Roger, thanks for letting us audition our QB. Looks like we could get a couple of first round picks for him"

"Hey Roger, sorry I missed you at the AFCCG. Heard you were in Atlanta. See ya in Houston"

"Hey Roger, don't know what all the booing was about but I thought you handed the trophy over to us with integrity"

"Hey Roger, Just traded our forfeited 4th round pick for a nice looking TE. Thanks for the approval on that"

I said i liked the trade now. If he sucks they
could just cut him. We will see. I hope he gets some early work with brady.

The league takes our highest 4th round pick. We had Seahawks pick, 122, and our own pick, 128. We were set to forfeit 122 and then we'd have picked at 128. Instead we traded the Seahawks pick, which was 122, to the Colt. Now we forfeit 128 instead, our original 4th rounder lower down, and now we have no 4th round picks.

I'm glad you posted this response because I get to winner rate the premise twice.

Such a great point. Anything that slaps the fraudster across the ass is winner worthy.

Love the trade.

Allen in theory fits perfectly in this offense and should be able to at least replicate Bennett's production this season.

I wanted him here last year before he signed his contract and before the Bennett trade.

Helps the run game and helps the red zone offense .
