Revis can reject offers for less than $6 million, without consequence

The $6 million payment contains offset language, creating a dollar-for-dollar credit based on anything Revis earns elsewhere.

But what if Revis is offered only $4 million? Can he choose to do nothing and take $6 million from the Jets in lieu of taking the offer — and helping the Jets save $4 million?

Per a source with knowledge of the Revis contract with the Jets, it contains no language requiring him to accept other work. This means that he can choose to reject any offer that he receives, and that the Jets can’t try to reduce their obligation to him if he opts not to take whatever he can get.

For Revis, then, the question becomes whether he’d play for less than what he’d get for not playing, whether he’d play for the same as what he’d get for not playing, and possibly whether he’d choose to take $6 million not to play versus, say, $8 million to play.

Hmmm... this could be Revis's...

...summer of George.

Really not interested, I think he's packed it in and won't be interested in truly putting in the work needed to succeed as a Patriot. Defensive back is loaded in this draft and they can really upgrade with yong talent their if they want. I would bet they go young at DB.

I would be surprised that this contract was even written, since that last year is so asanine and makes no sense for either Revis or the Jets, who could both benefit financially if there were other options in the clause. Then I remembered that Revis himself wrote it, and that was during a fifteen minute negotiation period when the Jets gave him a blank piece of paper.

This is old news. Revis' guarantee and off set language has been public for a few weeks. Nothing to see here, except weak speculation of a return engagement.

I think we all just think it's funny that there's a rather severe disincentive for Revis to play this year. If there's ever a player who would NOT play for pride if it doesn't also result in more money, it's him.

This is news to me. I never understood how this worked. If they were able to get paid by both teams or not. Now I at least know if there's no offset lanaguage it's possible for a player to get paid by both teams although I'm going to assume all contracts teams make with their players include this offset language.

I agree but I don't hold that against him either. He's been the absolute best at his position for a very long time, and while he doesn't seem like a good person off the field, he deserved to be paid commensurate with his talent level on the field. This is especially considering how organizations routinely renege on pacts with players. He put in the work for a long time and he got what He felt that effort was worth. He made himself as shrewd a business man as he did a great NFL corner.

But as Ivan stated, he's packed it in. He seems to have no real interest in playing the game at a high level anymore. He's made his money and got his SB ring, and his Canton enshrinement is a forgone conclusion.

I don't think contracts usually have this offset language. IIRC, San Diego's desire to have offset language in his contract was a point of contention in the Joey Bosa mess from last year.

It made some sense for the Jets. You don't want to see Revis signing to say the Patriots for short money and terrorizing you while he was still on your payroll. It made some sense for Revis. Get paid no matter what. I'm just amused that the end result is that the Jets are probably praying that someone signs Revis and Revis will probably not get an offer with enough zeroes on it to get him out of bed in the morning.

The Jets probably would have been better off if the offset wasn't on a 1:1 ratio but less. Something like if Revis signed a contract for $6million next year, the Jets would nullify $4.5million of their guarantee.
