Pats interested in Saints WR Brandin Cooks

If bb could land cooks, it would be a huge win for us, and make our offense almost unstoppable.

But we need help defensively. We have Hightower, sheard, Logan, Harmon, long, and maybe branch to replace.

I think we resign branch and I am sure we resign butler, after that it is doubtful we sign any of the others.
I don't know yet how we replace Butler or Branch if we resign them. It's that the same as firing someone in the real world? Lol

I was reading the Saints Forums and they are so clueless. Here are some quotes:

"Think we can get butler out of the deal with pats"

"Yea, we need Ryan/Butler with that pick too."

"32rd AND Garropolo"

Silly saints fans think their loud mouth WR is worth all that lol.

Patriots offered #32 for Cooks - New Orleans Saints - Saints Report - Message Boards
I think we are hoping maybe to not get a #32 but a proven defensive player that we really need for Cooks. That might be the real discution between BB and SP on the phone. A proven WR might be worth a proven LB to SP. Im sure some of our fans dont know that BB would never give us both, but a mutual arrangement between SP and BB as friends might be a possibility. I think like most its BB helping SP farm cooks, but I also see the side that BB and TB would love to have cooks in the stabe, and hes not expensive right now.

If I was SP Id be seriously looking for trading cooks for Hightower LB, and maybe also Malcom at DL and give you our 1st pick, and push it for your 5th round. Never get it but ID try. Solves 2 of our problems and 2 of yours, and we know sp can draft another WR talent, but dont know how to draft defense. Hurts no one.
Cooks is a proven #1 WR with 2-5 years of good productivity. I dont want to lose him but kid has a chip on his shoulder and only cares about 7. Kids got it and you can see it. He plays with defenses like they a not good enouph.
Cooks is easily worth a #32 pick but we need good defensive players that are proven. Not our bad drafts. So buying good DP from NE for our 1st makes sense. The chip is important with cooks most of the good players had it , so he will never be happy with what he did. Rice had that also. They never thought they were good enouph and keep pushing. Its what you see in good players that are not all about money like TB. LOL cooks is not a problem to team hes just never going to be happy. 1000 yards 2000 yards will never be good enouph for this kid, and is that so bad ?
Thing I love about cooks is he dosnt play. He turns his head down field and runs for his life. Thats important. He dosnt look back.

Again it all depends on the context of the trade. Do we have additional picks from a possible Jimmy trade ? What are we getting back from the Saints in a pick swap ?

If we get back a 3 or a 4 and get a few more picks from the Jimmy trade to take advantage of this deep draft class then I don't have a big problem with acquiring Cooks. If it is for our first rounder straight -- which appears to be a too steep price form BB/Caserio -- then I don't see the value.

My main issue with your post was comparing this to the annual Fitzgerald sign-the-beast thread and calling people who are intrigued by this fantasy football crowd.

If BB sees a #1-2WR need or even opportunity (while being confident Cooks melts in Pats culture w no locker room issues) then even a straight #32 would be reasonable simply because he can't find Cooks at any pick in the draft (just prospects). So even a swap of #32 for Cooks and a 6th would be a win (you know that there will be quite a few good prospects at #196 in this deep draft). He just gives up the hight of the pick not the pick itself for a proven playmaker that can possibly do wonders with TB.

Not that mocks mean anything but it is interesting that two CBS guys have Cooper Kupp for Pats #32. So just for fun: would you take Kupp or Cooks with #32?

NB - This trade would not count against comp pick equation. The price of any top FA WR - besides enormous price tag already in 2017/18 - would include (losing probable) 3 round comp pick..

So a lot of math actually strongly supports this move. Character and locker room effect is another matter of course - but its not too difficult to trust BB on those..

EDIT: Like you said - its a 2-yr deal like most in todays NFL and if they move on there's a possible 3 round comp back at the end..

__

BTW - I am not advocating or salivating for Cooks, just trying to understand the move in case “reports“ turn true

This whole Cooks trade scenario was started by his agent Ryan Tollner who happens to be the agent for Carson Wentz and Marcus Mariota. Cooks changed to Tollner shortly after he voiced complaints about getting zero targets after the Rams game last November, a game the Saints won by 28.

Really, who complains about not getting touches when your team puts up 49 points against a solid Rams D? What is it about some young players who have early success turn into such prima donnas? SMH

Chris Mortenson broke this story, probably on a leak from Tollner. It's no coincidence that the original leak had only two teams interested were teams with QB's he represents.

The horse is out of the barn now. I think he will end up being traded, but just not where his agent wants.

I'm very glad that I read this. Thanks.

I really like Cooks but I wouldn't trade Butler or Brown for him. Hightower is UFA, all the Saints have to do is back up the Brinks truck for him.

It looks like the trade rumor might actually be true, and not a load of bs or BB doing SP a favor. Time for my too sense.

Under normal circumstances I'd prefer a known player over a draft pick every time. I think it's one of the reasons the Pats have survived the loss of multiple draft picks.

It appears that Cooks is willing to do the work required to be a solid NYFL WR. That works in his favor and it would be great to have a WR of his ability on the Pats.

But the post I read here from @Obidan tells me that I don't want anything to do with him.

This guy is a whiner and he has Brees for a QB. He could be a lot worse off that's for sure.

I actually kinda hope this happens now.

I can see why the Pats would be interested in a guy like Brandin Cooks like we have seen last year after Gronks injury this Offense is now geared toward WR's inside and out. We just won it all with a serviceable TE in an Injured M. Bennett. I think going forward Gronk is a luxury but this Offense will not be crippled without him if inevitable happens. Also as clutch as Amendola is in the Playoffs he has put up mediocre regular season numbers plus he's known to get banged up. Looking at the Schedule next year we are playing some really Good Playoffs Teams. Nothing wrong with having adding to strong position.

I don't think Cooks is the trouble that some are making him out to be, and Belichick doesn't worry about diva WRs because he was more than willing to bring in Moss and Ichocinco, obviously with differing results. Cooks really is an explosive player and he could be nothing short of exceptional in this offense, as he does most of his damage after the catch. I would be more in favor of the deal if they could extend him before the actual trade, as he would come in happy and ready to go. And if they can offset the loss of the #32 with a high pick or picks then they could easily address the defensive issues with those picks and the cash they have available for free agency. As important as first round picks are they are still a crapshoot , especially when compared to proven difference makers like Cooks, and given the choice between the #32 or Cooks I would take Cooks every time. Getting a player as good as him at 32 would be a home run, and a prospect like McCaffery isn't in his class as a player.

I agree with everyone who see defense as the offseason priority but if they can bring in a talent like Cooks you do it if possible, and focus the most of rest of your resources on defense.

nooooo
Damn titans
I'm mixed on it. I'd love to have Cooks and would certainly trade the last pick of the first round for him, all things being equal. But I do worry about what he's going to want in his next, upcoming contract.

Mind Tricks with the rest of the AFCE so they go after the kid.

Brady deserves cooks, not Tennessee. Cooks would rot away in Tennessee

Come on Bb offer a little more get cooks here. I want brady to have really nice things, he's earned it

Could just be Payton leaking info. To force BB hand.
Either way BB has a specific value on what he'd pay for Cooks. He isn't gonna be held hostage to pay more than he feels he's worth.

If we really want him we should go get him.
