Fun SB hypothetical: If James White's knee was down....

No, I can see how my response was taken as a 'mocking' tone but I agree that a Brady game winning TD would have been the ultimate ending (but obviously we'll take any SuperBowl win however we can get it)

White was in. We dont need to revisit

This thread is not to discuss the White play at all. In fact, it's strategy talk had a different situation come up. Don't want to dicusss that? Then this thread is not for you. That's fine.

It was a joke man . Relax. Sorry to upset you. I did read all the strategy stuff on the thread.

Sorry, man. I can usually take a joke but apparently not today. My bad. I'm relaxed now. I promise.

my husband said some Atlanta fans posted "proof" on FB that White's knee was down before the ball crossed the plane

All that has to happen for it to be a TD is that any part of the ball crosses the front of the goal line. If the tip of the ball is past any part of the white goal line marker it's a TD.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of them, they make the mistake that the plane is the back of the goal line but it is the front.

Yeah, a Falcons fan brought it up today and I mentioned that the player only needed to cross the white line, backed up by several people around. The response?

"Well, that's a dumb rule. They should change it."

So, a fan who knows precious little about the game (and buys into the most outlandish conspiracy theories - some I've never even heard of before) and whines about changing the rules because he didn't like the outcome.

That's about what we're dealing with.

I smiled and went on with my day.

Amen. This ain't hockey. All you need is any part of the ball to cross any part of the white line when going into the end zone. When coming out of the end zone (if an offense is backed up) the opposite applies: You need the *entire* ball to cross the *entire* plane.

The easiest way to think about is that the actual goal line is really the infinitely thin field-side edge of the painted line. The entire painted line is actually part of the endzone. That's what a lot people forget/don't know.

Then when you couple that with the definition of a TD being "any part of the ball in the endzone" and the definition of safety being "ball dead with any part of ball in the endzone" it all becomes quite clear what the ball has to do relative to the painted line.

Hmm, I think he'll land a job with the Ravens or Colts.

If it's the pic that has been going around- the one with the "ball" circled in black and White's knee on the ground... the black circle was actually his arm not the ball.

Saw the replay lots of times and there is never a doubt it's a TD.

Agree with some of the points.
BB probably goes for it, however, that hypothetical would have been a massive gamble. The Patriots don't get in on 4th down? Now the Falcons SB win line moves from the Patriot zero yard line to the Patriot 35 (where a FG conversion becomes likely and game over). It's a hell of a lot easier to guard the short field of the red zone then guard the long field of FG range.
I'd kick the FG and make Atl earn the FG for the tie or the TD for the win. Fortunately it's academic...
