Asante hasn't signed his tender yet, wants no tag in 2008

That actually is true..he also has to pass the physical..I wonder which comes first?? What the order is? But reporting HAS TO include the signing of the tender...can't report without it signed so??

I posted my opinion over in this thread, but it seems relevant here.

I had the idea when I noticed in Reiss's article how his signing would bump them up from 80 to 81 players.

Basically, I think they let him do the physical/conditioning stuff without signing the tender to give the rookies one last practice. If he had signed a tender that morning, they would have had to cut one rookie before practice.

Hope this doesn't mean he intends on being a locker room cancer this season.

I have a feeling a certain man named Rodney might have a thing or two to say if Asante tried anything.

I really hope this is a roster numbers situation, because if Samuel arrived hoping to get the Patriots off the franchise tag, then this could potentially blow up. The Patriots will stiff him, and then Samuel might get his back up.

People make stupid decisions when they feel they've been cornered.

The time for negotiation is come and gone. The only deal he can sign is the 1 year tender.

Actually that's not true. I think the only restricture on the Pats is that all he can sign is a ONE year deal. They can do a lot of things to sweeten the deal, they just can't make it long term. For example:

They can give him more than the $7.89MM.

They can give him a few million of the $7.89MM up front instead of him waiting for the game checks.

They can create an incentive package for more money or getting rid of the franchise tage

ETC.

FYI

CBA experts: is there any reason he couldn't ALSO sign (say, at the same time as signing the 1-year tender) a SEPARATE, NEW contract for the 2008 season (and beyond)? Is it possible (note that I didn't say plausible, I said possible) that there is another contract, and perhaps each side has a copy locked in a safe?

No expert here but I belive that the deadline for the Pats to sign Asante to a new contract expired several weeks ago. Next window is March '08.
