Asante hasn't signed his tender yet, wants no tag in 2008

The time for negotiation is come and gone. The only deal he can sign is the 1 year tender.

There is still negotiation. Negotiation over whether or not he can be tagged next year for example.

And also I believe on a 1 year deal...not multi year. So there are still things on the table..not much..but negotitaions are going on..even in a tiny box.

Discussions? Maybe, but nothing that is enforceable by written contract. That's what allegedly teed AV off, that there was an understanding not to tag him year after year.

I stick by my original statement. No negotiations. 1 year tender or nothing. Pats hold all the cards.

What's the big deal? He didn't show up today just so he could leave tomorrow.
Yes, I know that nothing is done until the papers are signed. but, this really is much ado about nothing.

If he doesn't actually sign until tomorrow, I won't co-winner of the "official Asante signing contest".

Maybe it is really is a big deal after all.

I think they can get that written into a revised contract if both parties agree.

You all do realize that this entire thread is predicated on an unsubstantiated report from a rumor site on what Adam Schefter presumably said in his own unsubstantiated report?

This is from patriots.com:

When asked if he was relieved that the situation had been resolved, at least for the time being, Belichick responded, “Yes, it's always good to have all of the players available. Sure.”

So obviously BB is agreeing the situation is resolved.

Hope this doesn't mean he intends on being a locker room cancer this season.

Rumor is he's up to a pack of Camel non-filiters a day.

He can sign a deal other than the tender but it can only be a one year deal.

I suggested earlier that maybe he is offering to take less than 7.9 million to

get his freedom in 2008. I agree this is too late in the game to negotiate.

This should have been tried before training camp to get him into camp

on time. I'm sure the Pats will give him the cold shoulder.

In which case, I wouldn't call it a negotiation really... more of a "we won't concede that issue" from NE top brass...

He can sign the tender or a seperate 1 year deal that pays as much as the tender (or more) with any other terms the two sides agree to (like a no future tag clause).

Adam wasn't tagged year after year. He was tagged for about a week in 2002 before signing a 3 year deal. He was tagged again in 2005 after that deal had expired. There were rumors that the team promised not to tag him again when he reported to camp on time in 2005. That may or may not be why we didn't tag him in 2006. But Adam is on record saying if we had, he would have honored the tag again, although his preference was a long term deal.

The financial terms can't be for anything less than the prescribed tender.

I think Asante and his reps look absolutely F-ing STUPID and amateur-ish if this is how they're actually playing it. There is NO WAY Belichick would cave to this, ESPECIALLY now that Asante's there and it would constitute some sense of reneging and playing B.S. games.

Mo, I know you know the business end. So let me ask you, Is there any one year contract Asante could agree too which would have favorable terms such that the Pats might agree not to retag?

*Looking at the Briggs contract, it seems Chicago completely caved, agreeing not to tag and giving him extra money. Wow!! what a fold.*

That's not happening here.

Short of promising to intercept 20 balls or hand the Lombardi to the Patriots himself ***ante will never get that deal.

The article is posted on NFL.com now:

Adam Schefter said:
IN, BUT NOT DONE

As of Monday night, Patriots franchise cornerback Asante Samuel had reported to New England’s camp but still had not signed his tender.

The two sides were in discussions, mulling any possible options. And there are only two. Either Samuel signs his franchise tender as is, or he signs it with the stipulation that New England promises not to franchise him again after next season. One or the other. And in these matters, just like on-field matters, New England is tough to beat.

However it works out, an answer is expected Tuesday.

"Stipulation" as Schefter uses it is a 'wink-wink, yeah, we won't do that,' not a contractually binding term.

This to me is a non-story. Asante wouldn't be there at all if he thought he still had any leverage. He shows up, takes a physical and then, what? Turns around and leaves again?

He will get no significant* concessions and will sign the tender tomorrow.

* the Pats might throw him a bone - like a reserved parking space - something of no consequence which does not set another (post-Seymour) precedent of rewarding players for holding out, staying out, or any other form of being out.

This is misleading... you can not "report" to camp without a signed contract. "Dropped by" is a better term.

That actually is true..he also has to pass the physical..I wonder which comes first?? What the order is? But reporting HAS TO include the signing of the tender...can't report without it signed so??
