Felger: 2016 Patriots not an "all-time Pats team", just winning during a "bad year for league"

Felger owes his career and livelihood to the athletes he routinely disrespects .... and I think it explains why he hasn't interviewed any in years. They dont like him, and want nothing to do with him.

He's lame, and the Boston media should be embarrassed that he has such a large platform, despite knowing so little about the sports he covers

"I dont know what the Falcons do that makes them special. Atlanta is boring, and it's not worth my time even trying to discuss them"

WTF?????

Remember when you were 11 and you liked a girl, you became annoying and started staying stupid crap to get attention. Felger is 11.

I gave this some thought and well kinda true, our team is great but the AFC was pretty bad compared to recent years. I think this is a better description of the 2011 team that I think many felt was not a great team. This team has great offense and defense.
There's no question that this was a down year in the NFL So many teams that were expected to perform well and build on the success they had last year, either underperformed or completely regressed. That said, you gotta give credit for the Patriots for doing what they needed to do to get here. They had to overcome a lot of adversity e.g. Beating Arizona without Brady and several of your starters....beating Houston on a shortened week with your 3rd string QB....trading Jamie Collins and losing Gronk, then decisively beating Baltimore and Denver with shortened prep time. There are plenty of signature moments for this team

Indeed, I would say that with the exception of Oakland (if Derek Carr did not get injured) New England was really the only team suited to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

100% this. Is there really anyone here that cares where this team ranks in terms of past Patriots teams ? What's the point ?

We had better teams that missed the Superbowl and worse teams that made it there. And yet I kinda like each of the past teams for unique reasons. Hell, the 2013 team was overall pretty bad but the mental toughness they showed throughout the year (Saints win, Broncos win, Browns win) makes it unforgettable for me.

IMO with a healthy Gronk, VW and Talib in 2013 they beat DEN.

That was a good team with talent in the roster.

The problem is it wasn't healthy.

Not sure they beat SEA, though. I do know they wouldn't have lost 43-8 or whatever the score was.

Good, now it's guaranteed we'll win. He's just mad because he picked the Steelers and the Pats showed him just how little he knows about them. Oh, and good one Mike. You picked the Steelers, the Pats crushed them, but they have no good wins. Riiiiiggghhht. Tool.

Y'all know what his talking points will be if we beat the Falcons. It will be about how stupid Atlanta is for four hours.

Last year's team was pretty close to getting to the Super Bowl, and had they been just a little more healthy, I think they could've easily handled the Panthers

I personally could care less about the competition getting worse and having an easier road to the Super Bowl. The Patriots have been snake bitten several times in the Brady-Belichick Era. It's nice having things finally go our way for a change

Here is the Sports Take system that he uses:

Does the team suck? "This team sucks!"

Is the team good, but not a top contender? "They're a fraud, they're in purgatory. It would be better if they sucked!"

Is the team a top contender, but the league lacks other top contenders? "It's not that they're good, it's that everyone else is bad!"

Is the team a top contender, and actually had to beat good teams to win a Super Bowl? "Yeah but if Pete Carroll decided to run on the 1 yard line..."

Lol, you clearly have a future in sports radio my friend

If the Super Bowl was Dallas vs. Oakland (if Carr was healthy) or Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh, we wouldn't hear any talk about it being a down year in the league.

He's right, you know.

The audacity of Brady and Belichick to win against the teams on their schedule has reached biblical proportions. No self-respecting GOAT would have tried to win this year. As soon as it became apparent there were no great teams, Brady should have just taken a year or two off and come back when the the quality of opposition was agreed by the media to satisfy their standards.

I, personally won't even watch the SB, what's the point of winning it when you don't have the appreciation of supreme masterminds of the game like Felger. I'm sure Brady and the team feel the same. Don't be surprised to hear in the coming days that the Pats have forfeited the game.

IMO, 2015 was also a weak year. I think this team would still be 12-4 (give or take a game) in a "regular" year, and that still makes them elite.

I heard the beginning of the 4 o'clock hour when dbag felger floated this bs. It was very obvious trolling and he almost acted as if the listeners knew he was trolling and he knew as well. He said in order for Pats fans to gloat about a SB win Vs Atlanta, Pats fans need to start "talking up Atlanta"....

Thing is f&m have probably watched zero Atlanta games all season and they know nothing about the team...

Psssssh, I'm sure people of his ilk heaped all kinds of praise on Fivehead for vanquishing the legendary Rex Grossman Bears...

Why someone would voluntarily listen to all that is beyond me, but hey, it's not my time.

He's just trolling, and people fall for it. A statement like that makes for good radio fodder because it gets the local populace all riled up, but it is also very vague and not easily quantified so people can argue over the whole thing.

There is nothing significantly different about the quality of play from the top teams this year compared to previous years.

Yep.

But even apart from that the team had almost nothing on offense. Dola (torn groin muscle) and Vereen (broken hand/finger ?) got injured in the first season game, Hernandez got arrested at the worst possible time in terms of roster building, Dobson injured his foot after flashing against the Steelers. Gronk missed a ****ton of the offseason with that arm infection and got his knee shredded against the Browns.

VW against Atlanta, Mayo with a torn pec against the Saints.

That team was so depleted and still somehow dragged themselves into the AFCCG. It might have been one of the best coaching jobs BB/McD and Patricia have done.
