The NFL says it saw fewer concussions in 2016 than 2015.

Today the league announced that the total number of concussions in 2016, including all practices and preseason and regular-season games, was 244. In 2015, that number was 275.

32 teams play 20 games (reg season and preseason) which is 640 games.
These numbers say that each team has one concussion about every 2.5 games. That is ridiculous.
At some level of severity each team has many concussed players in every game.
We know players are not going to report it, especially the less severe ones, and we know the NFL has no interest in effectively identifying them.
Its like telling me you counted the raindrops during a storm, and this storm had fewer per hour than the last few.

Exactly. And what cracked me up is when I saw it on PFT, literally two headlines below it was "Dolphins say they did everything right on Matt Moore" after the NFLPA and NFL accused them of not diagnosing his concussion properly.

No. It just means they diagnosed less. We all know their research is flawed from the many reports FRONTLINE has done on it.

Saw more than a few players get absolutely blasted and were back in a play or few later.....guessing the NFL* did not count those....lots of concussion dodging this year.

When someone lies as much as they have, they lose all credibility, no matter what they say.
If they said the sky was blue, I'd immediately assume it was red, and I'd operate as if it was, until I could go check for myself.

I'll bet the farm the NFL moved the baseline for sideline-level concussion tests thus as a consequence decreasing the # of "diagnosed concussions"

That would be 244 players missed time with concussions, or roughly 8 players per team. I don't recall 8 Patriots being sidelined with concussions this year.

I still think about Rosie Colvin on Toucher and Rich saying what a joke the protocol was when he played. But with so much publicity in the last couple of years, I can't imagine sideline MDs would fool around with this given the risk of being sued now or in the future.

I agree with that, especially among linemen. The Steelers' Mike Webster story is so sad and tragic. Those guys smash heads on every play, usually none as acute as hits like the skill guys take that send them to the sidelines.

I'm still very sad about Bryan Stork who found himself out of football at age 25 after being so dominant at Florida State and winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots to become one of only a handful of guys in history to win an NCAA division 1 (or whatever they're calling it this week) and an NFL championship in consecutive years. Stork was a warrior and brought that nastiness to the OL that reminded me of Logan Mankins.
