All In The Family = GOAT

For those of us who grew up during those years...

To me that's a 1st place tie with Seinfeld, Meathead!

Seinfeld is one of my favs too but I put AITF in a different category because of its ability to get super serious and then funny 3 minutes later.

Oh jeez meathead, have you been talking to my wife? She found a station that plays old episodes and our house have Edith and Archie all day for a week now....

I wish it was on up here in MA!

That was a very unique aspect of that show. Can't think of any other sitcom, before or since, that could do that. AITF made you laugh your ass off, but it also helped to open minds.

Good Times ran a similar theme.

I agree but AITF did it better. Thats not a knock on GT, which was a damn good show- it just points the brilliance of AITF, which had an all-time great actor in C. O'Connor.

Mary was one of my first big crushes when I was young. It was kind of strange that me and my wife watched a couple of episodes of the MTM show the night be fore she died. She will be missed.
Just thinking of 70's that was the sitcom golden age with shows like Barney Miller, WKRP, The Bob Newhart Show, MASH, The Old Couple and so forth.

Also on my "Hit List" of shows I watched that are still, IMHO, funny today, were Taxi, WKRP in Cinncinnati, and the Bob Newhart Show.

One of the local sub-channels plays 'Night Court' and I'm finding that stands the test of time pretty well.

I put on modern sit-coms and they are just so STUPID!!! No substance at all compared to the ones you mention.

"See? Now I told you Laura you can't go out like that - you're too pretty!!"
Thanks!
A reminder, too, that in the '60's you had to say "pretty" and not "sexy" on TV. It was a big deal when they showed Rob and Laura in their bedroom...had to be separate, twin beds to get by the network censors at the time. I think it was also an issue on "I love Lucy."

Seinfeld was great and I've watched every episode multiple times...but All in the Family was groundbreaking and took on tough social issues by giving Archie and the "Meathead" lines that opened up issues like racism and anti-antisemitism for discussion by mocking them in a way that no one else could.

One of the reasons I've always admired Jerry Seinfeld is that he has always said that his series was "A Show about Nothing." It was just plain, flat out funny, week in and week out. The final Episode (two episodes, actually) mocked the entire premise of the show as being about a group of narcissistic, selfish New Yorkers. Sheer brilliance.
