Asante hasn't signed his tender yet, wants no tag in 2008

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel did not sign his franchise tender on Monday, because the Samuel camp is trying to get the team to agree not to use the franchise tag on him again, apparently if he meets a specific playing-time threshold.

Schefter says that, absent a deal, Samuel will sign the tender on Tuesday as currently drafted.

Our guess? The Pats won't budge. Why should they? The Patriots can franchise him again in 2008 and then get something of value in exchange for his rights next March.

Not sure what how this accomplishes anything, if he signs tomorrow.

(FWIW, I don't blame Asante a bit for trying. But I don't see why the Patriots would possibly yield on this. The most I could imagine would be an agreement to accept any trade above a certain threshold under a future franchise tag.)

edit: Ooops - I read the first post too fast - thought Schefter was the agent. Clicked "Post" - then it clicked in my brain that Schefter is actually a writer. Still, SOMEONE in the Samuel camp must have told Schefter that or he would not have printed it as indisputable fact.

Actually you can...the Franchise tag is part OF the CBA contract...it's more a gray area...where he hasn't signed it so he can NOT be fined for sitting out...but what is it but NOT a hold out? AND if it's past game 10...he gets NO credit for this season...so??

Couuld someone explain that Is that supposed to read. "Schefter says that, so long as the Patriots agree to the deal, Samuel will sign the tender on Tuesday as currently drafted." or "Schefter says that, absent a deal, Samuel will NOT sign the tender on Tuesday as currently drafted."

Why the hell would they even consider agreeing to that if they know he's signing it anyway. It's either oddly written or not right.

The Pats are restricted to signing Asante to the tender contract or

the parties could mutually agree to another contract of one year duration.

Maybe Asante's agents are suggesting he play this year for 6 million

dollars like the Pats offered with no franchise tag in 2008.

What we have here is 1 of 2 things:

1) A's guys are being really really dumb with no possible content to what they're saying (i.e., pretty please but if you say no I'll still sign,) or

2) There is a negotiation in place regarding 2008. Since the Pats wont (and shouldn't) give up their right to Franchise him, this leaves us with the question of whether the A.S. side is planning to pay now for freedom later.

Another posted raised one very decent scenario: 'Sante plays for less this year, in exchange for no tag next year.

If that's the case, it actually opens up the whole long-term-deal can of worms again (if the sides want to go there.)

Or, he's just signing tomorrow, and the rest is the "fog of war."

He's not under contract. Period. He's negotiating on terms with the team. To me, a guy who holds out on a contract he has signed is in a much different situation than a guy like Asante who is not under contract. The team holds his rights, but he's not obligated to play for them and they are not obligated to pay him.

This is interesting..but it doesn't really help Asante. The longer he stays out the harder it will be for him. Which is why this.."If you want me in camp you'll need to take off the Frabchise Tag next year"...is dumb. Short term it hurts, but long term it's the player cutting off his nose to spite his face. If he holds out more..no chance of a great season and mega deal down the drain. Which is why it is laughable for a player with a short history of stellar play.
Maybe it's the pay less no, tag thing...but why now?? Why didn't he offer that before? Shenanigans..more BS.

The time for negotiation is come and gone. The only deal he can sign is the 1 year tender.
