NFL Wild Card Playoff Scenarios Entering Week 17

John Morgan

Pittsburgh and Houston are locked in as the number three and four seeds respectively. That leaves three games to determine the conference playoff seeding. The three AFC games that actually matter today are Miami at New England, Kansas City at San Diego an

AFC Wild Card Round

#6 Miami at #3 Pittsburgh

Not sure if I should say shame on Cleveland for not going for two with 3:28 to play, or kudos to the Browns for forcing their division rival to play overtime.

If either Oakland wins at Denver, or KC loses at San Diego then it will be:

#5 Chiefs at #4 Texans

If the Raiders lose and the Chiefs win then KC is the #2 seed. In that case:

#5 Raiders at #4 Texans

Can someone let me know if the following is correct:

Regardless of the games left today, Pitt will play KC in the divisional round assuming they win (if play) on wild card weekend?

The prospect of playing the Texans and then the Raiders at Foxboro for a trip to the Super Bowl has my mouth watering. As close to a layup as you can get in the NFL.

The Steelers have to travel to Oakland, and the Chiefs are playing away from their famously noisy home field advantage-- nice embellishment.

Would they play that one in Mexico too

We don't need a layup. We will beat any of these teams.

If the chiefs get the 2 seed yes because they would be the 2 and 3 neither of which could play the 1 until the afccg.
Look at it this way.
The only teams we can possibly play in the divisional is the 4 5 or 6. We play the lowest of those 3 to survive.
If Oakland wins today (or kc loses) kc is the 5 and could face us in divisional.
As the 3 and 1 pitt and new cannnit meet until afccg

All I know is that KC wins and Denver wins. So the Chiefs will be #2 and the Raiders #5.

No that is not correct. There's a good chance we get KC if KC fails to win the division.

If KC wins and Oakland loses, KC gets the #2 seed. In that case - and only that case - are we guaranteed KC playing Pittsburgh in the divisional round (assuming Pittsburgh beats Miami). Right now Denver is getting the job done but KC looks like they don't give a damn.

For Pittsburgh to play KC in division round you have to assume
- (a) Steelers beat Dolphins
and also
- (b) KC wins AFC West (ie #2 seed).

If KC is a wild card (#5), then they cannot play Pittsburgh in division round. They could only meet in AFCCG.

Patriots cannot play Pittsburgh in two weeks. Pats will play lowest remaining seed of #6 Miami, #5 (Oak/KC) or #4 Houston.

If Miami beats Pittsburgh then Pats host Dolphins in division round.

If Miami loses then Pats host the KC/Oak at Houston winner in division round.

Thanks to all for the responses

So if KC finishes #5 and beats Houston, and Pittsburgh beats Miami, then yes - KC would then be at Pittsburgh in round 2.
That is not accurate. In that case, we get KC since we are #1 and KC is the lowest remaining seed.

Yeah, as soon as I hit 'Post Reply' I saw that was not right.

Pretty sure it is correct now.

Chiefs up 17-10

If Pittsburgh beats Miami on Wild Card weekend, they will travel to the #2 seed on division weekend (no matter what happens with Houston against KC/Oak). So the only way Pittsburgh plays KC on division weekend is if KC is the #2 seed, and that happens if KC wins and Oakland loses today.

In your scenario, if KC does not win the AFC West then they are the #5 seed and cannot play Pittsburgh on divisional weekend. Pittsburgh would go to Oakland if they beat Miami on WC weekend.

Chiefs up 17-10
And Broncos scored again to go up 17-0.

Not halftime yet but if those leads hold up then playoffs start with
- KC is #2
- Miami at Pittsburgh
- Oakland at Houston

Assuming that happens and Steelers at home can beat Dolphins, then round two would be
- Oakland/Houston winner at New England
- Pittsburgh at Kansas City

Lol, fixed part of that post but not that other line.

Good catch, let me try again....

On divisional weekend #1 plays lowest remaining seed (which could be 4, 5, or 6). #2 plays highest remaining (which could be 3, 4, or 5).

KC will be either 2 or 5. If KC is 5 and beats HOU and PIT beats MIA then KC will play NE.

Yeah to avoid playing both KC and Pittsburgh, the Chiefs needs to win this afternoon.

Day's not yet done : but there is a pretty good chance the first playoff opponent NE faces will be super weak. Not just "playoff weak", just plain old weak.
