Pats claim WR Michael Floyd

You think Bill Belichick is going to have a player who was here for one practice as an active WR against the league's number #1 passing defense, during what likely will be a gameplan designed for running/taking advantage of RB vs LB?

That would be awfully surprising, wouldn't it?
Such a thing would be totally out of character for Bill "Intentional Safety" Belichick, wouldn't it?

Reporter- "Could Weis play a role in helping Floyd pick up offense?"

BB - “I don’t know. He’s been here a couple of hours,” Belichick said. “We’ll see. Look, this isn’t the first time a player has ever come to a team during the season. So we’re not talking about a historical event here. So, whether it was Alan Branch two years ago, whether it was Kyle Van Noy this year, whether it was Jonathan Casillas or Griff Whalen a week ago, it’s the same thing we’ve talked about with every one of those guys. We’ll see how it goes.”

Hahahaha

I don't think he himself knows it but BB has moments of being a dry humor genius, almost Bob Newhart level.
I assume he wasn't trying to be funny -- haven't heard the audio of the comment -- but if I'm understanding the context correctly the "he's been here a couple of hours" is hilarious.

That's funny, he had no problem taking money from Jim Irsay and he was found drunk and asleep at the wheel with a bag of cash and another bag of prescription drugs, and oh yeah, his mistress died of an overdose in the apartment he was paying for.

The Colts are the biggest scumbags in football, they need to shut their pie holes.

100% perfectly said. Just perfect.

I would say thats just an added bonus to the signing they are really thin at wide out. When Hogan went down they were screaming for Matt Slater.. no thank you. We need another Wide Receiver without Amendola.

If the guy can play in 30% of the offensive snaps from the Jets game on, thats a good signing. I saw the guy play and he is definitely pretty good. Its a matter of can he pick up the play book or not.

I doubt he will see many targets thrown his way.

One thing I've been thinking about is his red zone value. He's 6-3. So the Pats could have 3 receivers at 6 foot plus at the goal line and all having 36" verticals. Plus a 6-6 TE with a 34" vertical. How many teams have the DB's to cover that?

Jump ball paradise.

Anyways something I've been tossing around.

****, now we are the Ravens

Every time a player gets out of franchise with all signs of dysfunctionality and fans start to point out his flaws I don't take that into consideration. Palmer has been awful and Arians too.

Floyd will have a totally different scenario in NE, it's up to him now.

Exactly.
I'd think MF has a chip on his shoulder/highly motivated, but it's up to him to be one of the last guys leaving the film room and/or stadium-practice. When TB wants to throw some pitch and catch, it's up to MF to be right there to jump in. And IMHO if he does this we may have just pocketed a real + for the upcoming SB run.
God forbid it happens yet just one more significant injury to a receiver and MF will be very needed.

I'm not saying that I believe this is the case : but what are the chances this is actually BB deciding he's willing to pay 1.3M$ for a 2018 draft pick ?

I think that wasn't the main reason, but it helps mitigate the cost. I also think it gives them a few months window at someone they were interested in signing in free agency.

Think about it. If you have a guy you want to target in the off-season, but you can rent him for a bit and see how he fits before you make him a big offer, why wouldn't you? Don't you think the Texans would have loved to have had Brock in for a few months before having to give him a massive contract?

Even if Floyd never makes a single catch for us, I love this deal because it's so low-risk, high-reward, and the rewards can be just knowing whether he's worth offering a big deal or not, or the comp pick for $1.3M. There's really no reason to be against this deal.

What Tom can do when his receivers have a catch radius wider than 2 feet....

Its great to have players that can win jump balls, but I am not a big fan of 50/50 balls. I prefer slants and crossing routes in the red zone. The fade passes look great when they work but they don't work half the time.

Sure. Me too. But doesn't the height add an additional target area for Brady? Wouldn't that force the opposing defense to put their tallest DB on Floyd?

Defensive back?

Well I don't know who the tallest corner on New England was, but Ellis Hobbs was lined up 1 on 1 against Plaxico Burress in 2007 on the .. like 3 yard line. In the undefeated season finale.. That was a gimme.

But Ideally yes you do want to match up the best you can, of course.

Scottsdale did and they're growing. When I can't use Uber and I'm that blasted, I use a taxi.

Oh, yeah, don't confuse that post with my apologizing for a DUI. I think DUIs are one of the worst non-capital crimes you can commit because they're just an absolute blatant disregard for the lives of people around you. And for NFL players with more money than God and so much to lose, there's even less than no excuse.

(But I don't look to football players for moral guidance, so I can compartmentalize Floyd as bad person and good guy to root for without amy particular problem)

I don't think defenses matchup height they matchup skillset or skill level.
That said Floyd is a weapon and ought to help out offense in many ways if he can assimilate
