Overall happy to hear it but I am not a fan we are giving him 5 years based off 11 overall well played games. It is a risk and i would have liked a prove it deal next year just to see if he could do it back to back years.

Overall though that is one key spot down.

Prove it deals are usually given to guys coming off bad years, not guys coming off good years.

Plus, the way the NFL works this will effectively be a 2-3 year deal with 2-3 years tacked on that will never be seen, which will help spread the signing bonus cap hit and mitigate future risk. Remember that Revis' deal is a 5 year deal, and there's another thread on this board on how he'll likely be dumped this year after year 2.

Good stuff. If Mason can improve on his pass blocking a bit, and our younger guys continue to improve we should be in pretty great shape going forward on the O-line.

Solder's contract runs out at the end of next year, correct? Hoping they don't touch his contract and evaluate a possible better option.

What would an upgrade cost? Solder is an average left tackle. I suspect someone considered one of the top 5 or 6 left tackles would command more than the Patriots would be willing to pay.

He actually had played well at RT whenever he has been healthy.
Playing OT with a foot injury is not a good basis for judging a player.

I was harder on him than most, but he's really rounded into form as the season has gone along. Very curious to see the specifics of the contract, but without a doubt he would've been paid this offseason, and if he's getting reasonable starter money I'll consider that a win. Even a moderate overpay is fine if that's what it takes to keep our OL from looking like the Broncos', given that Vollmer's presumably gone.

That's crazy. Solder is a pure tackle and a pure left tackle at that. He's been consistently excellent since he's been here. His loss last year devastated the team. Not to say we shouldn't draft a tackle, but Nate Solder is not a weak link on this team.

Don I am not knocking Solder I like the guy but I think he gives up the Most Pressures along our OL. It also wouldn't shock me if he gets an extension next year also.

Solder is fine for next year, but grooming a LT for the future is probably wise. Mason is up-and-down, Thuney is fantastic, Andrew is totally fine by me too (especially for the $). Do we know if Tre Jackson is gonna start practicing soon, or is that still up in the air?

Either way, the tackle situation is fine for the near future, and will probably cost less money overall when they dump Vollmer. Drafting a G next draft and maybe a developmental LT would be good...

Solder will be 29 next year, and he's not going to be worth another big money deal when he turns 30. If he'll play financial "ball" with the Patriots, he'll probably get another deal. If he won't, he'll be moving on. Watching the Patriots draft in rounds 1 and 2, this off season, should give us a window into the Patriots thinking on this.

Keeping Solder obviously wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen, would just hope they wouldn't make that decision now given there's still another year on his contract and they could evaluate during next season.

The reality is Brady will be 40 years old next year, and there's more importance than ever on keeping him upright. We've already seen him get roughed up this year and dealing with a gimpy knee. Would guess Bill and co. would be willing to put a premium on ensuring Brady stays as healthy as possible, and work around the cap to do so.

Assuming this site is accurate, Solder is currently #11 in average tackle salary. Less than 2 mil separates him from being in the top 5, and a little over 3 million seperates him from the highest paid.

FWIW, the five years on the deal may just be a formality. We really won't know until we see the specifics. It could easily be for all practical purposes a 3 year deal.

Our RB's and TE's are going to have to do some extra chipping off the Edge starting this week that should help our Tackles especially Solder.

Will be interesting to watch him against Denver in a few weeks. I'm sure it will be just as loud as the playoff game last year. If he shows improvement against that pass rush, it bodes well for the postseason.
