2016 COMBINED: Pats Roster Transactions

They have to make a roster move by tomorrow.
Patriots have open roster spot. With 52 players on the current roster, the Patriots have one open spot that has to be filled before Sunday’s game. The reason it has to be filled is that a team can’t carry “exception” players on its practice squad (e.g. LB Trevor Reilly) unless it has a full 53-man active roster. So if the Patriots decide to fast-track Lewis’ return and play him Sunday in Buffalo -- which seems unlikely after just two practices -- there is already a spot waiting for him.
Patriots have options on when to promote Dion Lewis to roster

I would be shocked if they activated Lewis.

I think they want to see how the players who truly are on the fence to play respond to any treatment over the next 24-48 hrs.

In addition, they also want to see who will be deactivated or ruled out by Rex as that might impact who they want to plug in on D or O and exploit the matchup- especially if Shady truly can't go.

They have a pretty long

Would not be surprised if either Bolden takes a game off and one of the guys is called up for ST play or they have made the commitment to Shankey because another team was going to scoop him, but are just waiting to post it to keep the Bills on their toes.

I thought they only had to do that if they had a guy in his 3rd season that's on the practice squad?
Trevor Reilly, per Reiss. Sankey and Gaffney also 3rd year players. Not sure what qualifies.

Bennett missed practice. They going to go with only one healthy TE?

Bennett would be a loss to be sure, but Fleming can assume some in line blocking responsibilities with more snaps for Develin, who has similar responsibilities at FB and has also been working with TEs since the summer. Didn't we used to have 27 TEs at one point? And still Reece sits....

If its about temporary filling up the spot (with some new addition in mind) the least painful would be Reilly.
The only guy from PS who could be useful on the field is A Johnson which is kind of ironic since they cut him at the beginning of the week.
If they don't intend to play Lewis it would make no sense to bring him on now unless they already know there will be no new additions to the team.

The biggest ? is the TE position - especially if Bennet is inactive - but I doubt anyone from the PS can really make a difference there being active. Miguel reminded of several Pats players from preseason that could be added - but not at the end of the week. Here just as a reminder of the depth Pats had ..

I guess Bennett should be active - at least just in case if something happens to Gronk. Probably they can use him for blocking without much harm - but I agree Fleming is a good option there.

Really wonder why the Patriots haven't come in and scoop up Reece. I don't imagine he's asking for much. And he's a Pro-Bowler

Didn't he say he was going to a new team? It is very confusing.

Maybe they have a handshake agreement w/ him and will sign on Monday.

That way with the bye he'll have 2 weeks of practice before the SEA game.

Good point. Could be.

For now Gaffney is the 53rd man.
Funny, was thinking about him just an hour ago.
Looks like play-it-safe signing. Easy to get him back to PS if needed.

PS
If he's anything but inactive its gonna be a surprise (w Bolden taken off injury report).
Still, welcome back - even if just for a couple of days, binkie.
Maybe small reward for all the good work he's put in from spring on after two devastating years.

EDIT: Since they'll probably wait with Lewis for two more weeks, one new signing is indeed very possible next week.

Why did they cut AJ on Monday, especially if Gaffney is inactive?

Did they have a competition between practice squad members to award the hardest working member a roster spot?

So (providing no new injuries) they keep Gaffney and cut DJ when Lewis comes back?
