If you remember, the game was actually a pretty close, competitive match. No acts of desperation were called for. Then, this....

(sorry it probably won't play embedded in this site b/c NFL)

I can't decide which is funnier, that or the butt fumble. They have both brought me so many laughs and so much enjoyment. :)

The Butt Fumble has to win for sheer individual inanity and hilarity. But The Punt is just a great example of institutional incompetence from the top down.

What is it about playing the Patriots that brings out the absolute worst in some teams???? Is it panic on their part ( e.g. Colts) or a thought process that concedes the Patriots are a thoughtful well run organization and they want to prove that they are smahter....???
You see three guys standing over your center on the trick play, you take a step back and call a time out. Later on at the press conference, you announce you had a trick play but wasn't going to work so you scraped it....Instead it's a highlight (lowlight) that will be forever be shown...

They didn't even need to take a time out. They were punting at midfield. Just take a delay of game. A punt would probably reach the end zone anyway.

This discussion just brought to mind the Mic'd up sideline footage of the Edelman to Amendola pass play in the 2014 Baltimore divisional game. They decide to do that trick play in the next series, and McDaniel thinks to ask Edelman "Do you need any warning or anything before I call the play?" and Edelman says "Nope, just call it."

Checking with key players before you do something unusual. Something you'd think any team would do, but...

How does one explain the idiocy of such a blunder?

I guess we never officially agreed on a name. Has the interwebs converged on one?

The best part of it is Collinsworth going "Uh oh!" when they start to shift, thinking they've got some clever trickery underway... then after the play going, "What in the world...?"

take that, NFL!

In 50 years of playing and/or watching football- that colts "play" was w/o question the most dumbfoundingly asinine thing I've ever seen- on ANY level. I love the buttfumble- but the "fake punt" wins because it was actually PLANNED. I remember my jaw dropping at the "formation"- then I was laughing my ass off before they even snapped the ball- " they're gonna get crushed!"
