Dion Lewis Update

Depends on the definition of starting, but I do more or less agree. I'm skeptical that he can handle a huge workload, and Blount deserves a lot of credit for how he's played so far. I would hope that if Lewis comes back at 100% he'll get the majority of the RB snaps, but it will hopefully be a lot closer to 60/40 than it was last year pre-injury. We have to do what we can to keep Lewis healthy, but it's pretty clear to me that when he's out there he gives this offense a higher ceiling than Blount does. More versatile, more elusive.

This.
Its like a double edge sword. I want him in there majority of snaps because he is such a dynamic explosive versatile, elusive back and can move chains especially on crucial downs, However, with that bein said, I wouldn't want him in there being a work horse either. Now with Blount they can spell each other and be used to share work almost interchangable for JMac. I'm Pumped just to see our Receivers along with Lewis & Blount hopefully healthy together this time around.

Hopefully around week 10-11 he's back, and he shakes off the rust for those first few games. Just in time for the Ravens and Broncos. (weeks 14, 15).

Come playoff time, this offense better be healthy. It'll be unstoppable.

Hopefully we have the #1 seed wrapped up going into week 15. Denver makes me nervous. Dirtiest defense in football. I could see TJ ward going knee hunting vs NE to give them a chance against us in the playoffs. Would love to be able to sit the regulars for most of that game.

even if we had it locked it BB would probably still play Gronk and the full complement of players

Nah, he's shown a willingness to sit guys like Gronk in that situation...he's smartly moved past the blanket "football players play" stuff.

We will probably still have that debate in Week 17 as the usual suspects shout that from the roof tops... then guys like Gronk, Bennett, and Edelman all sit.

Back to Dion Lewis thread: Is him walking around the locker room a sign? I'm sure he's been there, just maybe not when the reporters are around. I'm anxious, as is everyone else, for his return but I want him at as much full speed as possible.

With Lewis, we reported in July that the issue plaguing him was not related to the ligaments so I’m deducing it may have been a stress fracture which would have to be stabilized and then rehabbed. In short, I have no hard news on "where he is," but I do suspect his powerful quads and lower body put a lot of stress on that recovering area as he rehabs, and caution is key in bringing him back because of his playing style.
Friday Bag: What's the latest on return of Patriots RB Dion Lewis?

Stress fracture from rehab??? Whtf did he pull that out off his prostrate? Yeah so I don't really know, but lets go with a wild guess of an injury that no one has ever heard of happening.

My mind goes, not related to ligaments => clean up some cartilage or scar tissue or bone spur as has happened to hundreds of other players in a knee surgery situation that come back and has minor swelling or pain.

And of course its NE, so maybe it IS directly related to the ligament. To clean up a minor fray that was impacted by one of the causes above

Dion Lewis is an enigma....in college, he earned a reputation for durability and having tons of carries per game. Now he seems to be one of the more injury-prone players on our roster

Could be NFL speed and strength catching up to his small body size...or just his playing style putting him at risk

It isn't a wild guess. It is known to happen, especially at the attachment site of the graft. You could do a little research before making harsh accusations.

I had a dream that Dion was put on IR. Had to check here to see if it really happened.

You think that's bad?!...I've been getting a bad feeling about tomorrow all week. We expect a perfect homecoming for Brady, where the Bengals get blown out. I have a feeling it's gonna be a tough game..and I have a really bad feeling one of our players will go down with season-ending injury, and I hope it isn't Tom.

Yes, but I was thinking a fracture more along the lines of this (see bold):

Reconstruction surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) performed arthroscopically presents a high rate of good results.1 More than 100,000 new cases are performed in the United States every year.2 However, this procedure is not free from complications,3 with an incidence rate of between 1.8% and 24%.4

The complications that have been described include: arthrofibrosis, patellar fracture, “Cyclops” lesions, synovitis, patellar tendinitis, pain in the graft donor area and osteolysis,3 among others. The commonest of these is joint stiffness.4 Fracturing of the proximal tibia is a serious complication that has only been described in a few cases in the literature.5 and 6 In the present report, we describe this complication

I think Tiger Woods had this happen and was out for a long while. If that happened, Lewis would be gone til next year, not back in the locker room 3 weeks later. Hence my shock at the claim. But I guess its possible you can have a minor patella (kneecap) fracture setback as well, which might be what the Twitter OP was implying. Healing time, for those not inclined to read, 4 weeks on crutches, and back A-OK. Although both of these are directly a result of the tendon surgery, not the tendon technically. I guess we'll find out some day (hopefully soon) what the cause of setback was. Sadly I also found out during this wiki research journey, each day on crutches/cast you need another day to rebuild muscle mass. So we're looking at a few more weeks before a Dion sighting. But hey I'm no doctor...

He called it a stress fracture, which makes more sense. It was originally reported as :
Lewis will begin the season on the PUP list and should be out at least 8 to 10 weeks.

That is not entirely consistent with a "clean up" which was also reported. So we were largely in the dark regarding one of our most talented offensive players (White thread notwithstanding). The good news is that he was in the locker room this week which historically has signified an imminent return.

My main point though is that we should not reflexively shoot the messenger bearing bad news. BB reveals nothing so reporters are our main source of information. I think the press gets a bad rap on this site ("mediots"). There are a few bad apples (Tomase, Borges) , of course, but most guys do a very good job (Curran, Reiss, Howe, etc.) and provide us with useful information (Hightower--meniscus) we would not otherwise have . I really appreciate their work, and I cringe a little when then are criticized just because we don't like what they say.

In my opinion, you cited the very rare exceptions to the sad fact that mediots totally suck....they are worse than ever, only concerned with a website "hit" or a rating point at the expense of their integrity.

Reiss, Curran, Howe and a couple of others are as good as it gets and sadly about the only ones that can be trusted to provide good information.
