Veteran Backup

Taking as a given that Jimmy is too hurt to play the Texans, if he is still unable go for the Bills game, would you sign a veteran off the street to start against the Bills?

I guess the question is whether you trust Brissett, who has flashes of brilliance but is still rough around the edges, or someone who has a bit more NFL experience and might pull off a victory?

I think Matt Flynn will be in a Pats uniform early this week, since of the veteran QBs out there they all suck but at least he has spent a little bit of time here.

Flynn seems like the most logical choice. Although he wasn't with the Pats for long, he at least has some familiarity with the playbook.

Who do we cut, then? Not sure it's worth it for two weeks -- but then again, if we need another QB, then it's the single most important personnel decision of the past year.

We have to get another QB. If something happens to Brissett there is no one to back him up. And no Edelman does not count.

I think that Hoyer or Cassel would be more logical than Flynn, honestly. Yes, it would take a trade, but Hoyer with Chicago and Cassel with Tennessee shouldn't be expensive..

@mgteich -- Then who do we cut? I was posing a question, and working through the positive and negative implications, not making a definitive statement.

Edelman was sitting with Brissett and McDaniels so yes he is QB #4 as of now.

Cassel is the primary back up in Tennessee. I don't know if they will trade him for less than a high mid-round pick. Not sure about Hoyer though. I just don't know if they can put a trade together fast enough for Thursday without getting raked over the coals.

Hoyer is the only backup in Chicago too.

Yes because they had no other options during the game.
We're not getting any #4 up to speed for Thursdays game so IMO Edelman is #4 for now.

Cassel's salary for 2016 is $1.25M. If you trade him only to release him after two weeks, he'd be eligible for termination pay (i.e., to collect the entire amount).

Just a thought: the Patriots have been going with just two QBs on the payroll for most of the last four years.

I would imagine they developed some sort of plan for "Oh, bleep, we only have one QB right now."

I don't think it would be an issue with Chicago.. they've done so much dealing this year..

It's Peyton, Peyton for two games.......
"It's Peyton for Thursday Evening" (sing with Lionel Richie's voice)
