The New England Patriots gained $2,805,000 in cap space by restructuring Devin McCourty's deal

Does this hint at a possible Collins deal? The top paid LBs are in the $10-$12M range, and we had around $9M in cap space.

Collins had a cap hit around $1.1M this year compared to Hightower, so we would potentially need more room to fit in an increase. If Hightower signed, then we could have probably fit it in with our previous room.

I believe both LB's get signed eventually. I have no fear there, assuming they also meet the team of course. It takes both sides in every negotiation.

A great move by the Patriots! I hope we extend Hightower, Collins, and Butler first!

This is just business as usual for the patriots.

They will have more flexibility in negotiating. If they don't use all the 2016 cap money, it will automatically move to 2017.

I see Ryan or Harmon as the most likely next steps.

Sure, they would like to extend Butler, Hightower and/or Collins. Those are likely more difficult players to sign than players like Ryan and Harmon. The Freeny and Ninkovich extensions are the kind that Belichick gets done first.

I think so too, but the key would be to get one signed now. Then we can use the franchise tag on the other, and Butler is an RFA so we can match any offer.

If we don't get one of the LBs before the start of free agency, then we could potentially lose one.

As for the Ninkovich deal, I wonder if the league is going to get pissed at the Patriots (again). The Patriots renegotiated Brady's deal to reduce the potential lost suspension money by $2M, and this will save Ninko around half a million as well. I could see Goodell taking this personally and trying to make an example out of us. Logic and evidence and law need not apply, as we already know.

Definitely up to something here. Hopefully freeing up money for extensions, but could be a trade of some kind too (though seems unlikely).

Good move Ninkovich taken care of and McCourty moves some money around.. all is well in Pats land.

Any restructure means less cap now, more later.
Since they had plenty of space this only makes sense if they are planning to re-sign or extend someone else that commands cap money now.
