I don't see it. Depth is important but you have diminishing returns at some point. Would you rather have 6 Randy Moss clones or 5 Randy Moss clones and Slater? Give me Slater. At some point you just need to not be so concerned about starting depth be but sure you field competent to good STs units.
But if a skill player can play special teams close to as good and nake a big impact on offense or defense you have to at least consider it.

I understand your reasoning but we don't have 1 Moss on the roster let alone 6.

The things I might trade Ryan for.

Ryan&Cannon for a good 3rd OT. (also this drops some cap)
Ryan&Long for a good starting DE
Ryan for a 4th round pick (best you could do for him i think as far as a draft pick)

I would not trade him for a RB. We would not get one with enough impact for him and frankly I'd rather keep a solid #2 CB over a good RB.

The thing is we don't NEED to trade him. Where do we need the help?

3rd OT yes but that might not even be an issue this year for all we know. Everywhere else?

QB - no
WR - no
OIL - doesn't look like it right now
TE - no
RB - maybe but i just don't see a way it works.
DL - we are good enough here and don't need to upgrade though it be nice.
LB - no
S - no

Yeah only thing I'd trade Ryan for would be a legit 3rd tackle thats starting caliber.

The CB2 position in this defense is mostly reliant on the system with an elite CB1 across the other side on an island (Talib, Revis, Butler) with McCourty helping shutdown the #1 WR in a double team with the CB2 (Dennard, Browner, Ryan). Dennard's out of the NFL and Browner was the worst CB in the NFL last year.

I think we'd be strong with a CB group of Butler, Coleman, Jones, Jones, Roberts but as you say I'd only consider it with a good tackle in return.

Ryan's gone next year anyway with this deep of young talent at CB and the big four FAs to resign. Trading Ryan would be similar to a Chandler Jones trade.

Keep it Short: Saving Tom from getting killed is the only thing stopping us from #5. Stopped #5 last year and other years as well.

Or a third round pick for Ryan some team will have a number 1 or number 2 db go down and then we may have options.

You take the 6 Randy Moss clones, every damn time. That's not even a remotely debatable comparison.

Yeah that was just an easy way to get the point out there. Like even if you have amazing depth at some point it just sits on the bench and doesn't do anything for you

True but no one at WR is close to Slater as far as STs impact.

I love this roster, but hope BB doesn't wait too long before trading off extra players for picks.

I don't relish seeing another Lee Smith Will Yeatman fiasco.

Imagine how much the Pats would dominate if there was a minor league or some sort of reserve system, instead of having to cut players loose.

I don't think any other team is better than the Pats at dredging up / developing players.

To be fair, that fiasco looked a lot worse than it was at the time. Lee Smith is making a whole lot of money to block, but let's be real: everyone here, myself included, saw Yeatman as the superior player (he was Sudfeld before Sudfeld) and he ended up having a poor man's Steve Maneri career.

Agreed, and BB is not likely to let a guy go who becomes All-Pro elsewhere, but those are still guys I think BB was hoping to get to the PS, and were a lot better than some of the TEs that the Pats signed due to injuries.

It is also quite possible those guys would have developed more with the Pats' coaches.

After I wrote the hat I realized that we do have one Moss like talent on the roster in Gronk.

but if moss clones #4, #5, and #6 can play special teams, wouldn't you keep them over the ST only guy?

Bennett is a fool. Lol

Bennett has to be the funniest player to ever walk through the locker room. His soundbites this season, especially if he does live up to the hype, are going to be priceless. I just hope he doesn't get himself benched for the first series of any games this season.

I say trade Ryan at a high value now keep Roberts obviously both Jones.
Sneak our other dbs on the practice squad or dreaded foxboro flu for next season.
What? There is nobody behind him that's proven to be better.

The point is they don't. At least not nearly as well.

Cyrus Jones is Logan Ryan clone, so trade is option, but are they prepared if Malcolm gets hurt with so many rookies?
How can you make this claim?

As long as no wives of coaches are involved, I think we'll be OK...

I can't understand all the "trade Ryan" talk here. Did everyone forget that in a particularly bad injury year, Ryan and Butler rarely missed a down. In today's NFL you HAVE to have 3 starting CB's, because there will be 3 on the field a majority of the the time. And since this is age of 3 starting CB's, you need good back ups for each of those positions. You don't trade your 2nd best CB HOPING that some UDFA will fill the role just because they had a good day or two in TC. So if "team building" is hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst, you DON'T trade a proven player. If this team is truly going to have depth, you really need at LEAST 5 CB's who are all capable of starting
