Would anyone kick the tires on RB Arian Foster?

So much reward but just too much risk. He isn't playing for peanuts and he's had some significant injuries.

Not nearly as foolish as signing on old and often injured turd like Foster....

Look how we found Lewis... Look at Thomas Rawls... Freeman in ATL. Murray in OAK, Hill in cincy, the guy in Arizona.. The Giants new RB

they are easy to find. Don't go pay a washed up FA.

I have no interest in Foster but I'll take any one of Forte, Ivory, Miller plus a mid round pick. Simply counting on a rookie with a SB caliber team riding on it is foolish.

Yeah, because the Corey Dillon signing is the norm, right?

Do you really want me to list off all the names of young backs that were really good last year and were picked off the scrap heap?

Now, you tell me how many old running backs who get cut and go on and do big things on the wrong side of age 28...

Name me the young backs that were picked up off the "scrap heap" and were really good last year, outside of Dion Lewis and Thomas Rawls

As for the wrong side 28 yo RBs Frank Gore and D'Angelo Williams finished 9th and 10th in rushing. In fact 6 out of the 11 top rushers last season were 28 or older and another one (Chris Ivory) was 27...

Gore production wise would have been better if Luck didn't miss half the season.. Teams would have had to respect the pass more, would have opened up more stuff for him.

Put Forte in here with just average run blocking and he'll have a 1000-1100 yard rushing season and will have about 400-500 yards receiving. But ya let's just pass on a guy that could give the Pats 1400-1600 total yards because he is older than 28 and instead pick up some young guy off the "scrap heap" just because he's young...

Right on the money. They need to double dip at RB, one proven and one mid round pick.

I want nothing to do with Foster. He can't be trusted to stay healthy and his passion for football doesn't seem to match the player we like here.

Matt Forte is a totally different RB. He hasn't missed a lot of games and would be the first complete back we've had in a long time.

You named some RBs that have been drafted over a span of several years. Many, MANY more have done nothing. It's like saying we should focus on undrafted free agents for CB because of Butler and Chris Harris.

What Giants RB? Rashad Jennings?? Well you just completely killed your "no RBs over 28 argument" Jennings will be 31 next season.

As for the others, all but Rawls were drafted between the 2nd-4th round, that isn't exactly the scrap heap for RBs. Freeman didn't do **** his 1st year, Murray was in his 3rd year this season. Jeremy Hill was picked in the 2nd which is basically the 1st for RBs nowadays and David Johnson was picked in the 3rd

Can't rely on a rookie their first year and there is zero guarantee some "scrap heap" JAG is gonna come in and play well. Pats need to get a proven RB not some JAG that may be good is everything goes right

Another thread on whether or not the Pats should "kick tires" on injury prone broken down players....
How bout they sign someone w/o an injury history for a change...
I mean I LOVED what Dion lewis did but u had to figure he wasn't gonna last the whole season given his history & voila....on IR in what, week 8????
Some coach, maybe it was Tuna, once said something to the effect of "the most important overlooked stat is games played".....
Value is great & all but what happens when that injury prone "value" guy (Lewis) becomes a HUGE part of ur offense then goes on IR? I mean the odds were AGAINST lewis staying healthy all year...

You all are ignoring the #1 reason go avoid old players. They cost money. Which we don't have much of.

If you consider 4th round picks significant currency, well then yeah, I guess I want them to use significant currency on a RB too.

But not 9 million dollars for an old has been.

Rawls, Lewis, Freeman was only a 4th round pick. Lamar Miller was a 4th rounder a couple years ago.

Again, it's not a difficult position to find talent.

Spending money on old guys isn't the answer; especially for a position that we rarely use

Where did anyone suggest shelling out $9m for either Foster or Forte?

Miller is irrelevant to the question, as he's neither a scrap heap player nor a UDFA.
Lewis' question was always more about durability than running ability.
4th round isn't the scrap heap.

So we're looking at 1-2 players, so far.

If he is cheap then absolutely. Split carries with Lewis

LOL at thinking Lewis wasn't a scrap heap pick up, WOW you're funny.

Ironic coming from the "sign the old guys!" Poster. Show me where that works

If you think the difference between a SB and an AFCCG loss is a frank Gore, Arian Foster, or Forte, I've got some ocean from property in Idaho to sell you

Also LOL at thinking it's safer to pay an old free agent decent money than drafting a guy in the 4th

It is absolutely safer to pay a proven nfl #1 pro bowl back (especially 1 that holds the NFL record for receptions in a season by a RB, something the Pats value a lot, Pass Catching Backs) than it is to take a RB in the 4th and make him your #1 RB his rookie season... I mean come on..

Also the majority of the people that are saying go get Forte are also saying they should take a RB in the draft

Anyways you already defeated your whole argument when you mentioned Rashard Jennings

I didn't say that Lewis wasn't a scrap heap signing. I said his issue has been health more than running talent. Are you going to be another poster who doesn't bother to read?

You've got the wrong guy if you think I just jump on every old guy who comes down the pike. But, as for when it works, just looking at N.E. during the BB era, it worked with Sammy Morris. Dillon was a trade, but bringing him in worked. It also worked with Antowain Smith.

Yeah, you're going to be one of those...

And for the record, I'm all for Forte, but not for Foster.

Lewis is better than Forte at catching balls.

Why would you want to reduce Lewis' role by signing Forte?

Also, Barry Sanders is a proven pro bowl back too. Sign him!

Jennings is a good back who was cheap and not a known commodity. That's scrap heap stuff. Never said he was a rookie.
