I can't speak for everyone but, I'd only consider a trade if someone is offering a first round pick and Jones is asking for more than the Pats can fit in the cap. Maybe request the pick for next season because of the ridiculous conditions of the punishment....

Didn't we just have about 25-30 in available space only a couple of years ago during the offseason? On top of that, we have 4 major players on defense that will need to be retained this year, including Sheard.

If people really think that we'll have 4-5 players making double digit salaries AAV, they haven't been paying attention to Belichick's value system and ability to replace through the draft. As far as Jones goes, yes they should likely keep him for 2016, unless they get a decent offer and/or they don't think he's worth the 7.799 million dollar cap hit.

Brady's time is winding down I want as strong a team as we can have next year without splurging in FA. Jones for $7M is a very fair cap expense.

The espn splits on Jones are very telling. All his sacks this year have come when the Pats have been winning or tied, he has 0 sacks when they have been trailing. In the last 6 games of the season he finished with 2 sack and both came against Tenn. Has zero sacks on grass and all of them have come on turf.

2 playoff games vs Denver and he has been shut out both times.

I could see him playing for a coach like Parcells and Parcells putting a gas can in his locker.

He's a 1st half player and fades mid year. The writing is on the wall when they drafted Flowers and Grissom.

Yes, and perhaps Grissom and Flowers will be able to replace him in 2017.

Even though I am not as high on Jones as some posters are here, I would not trade him. I think keeping him, Sheard and Nink in a rotation is pretty good, and not the problem of this team. Finding a guy in the draft that can get 10 sacks a year and set the edge is going to be tough to find.

What I said was I don't understand how potentially having 15m dollars with 4 quality players that need extending this season (at least 1-2 are priorities right now) AND Butler equates to this being the best situation we've been in "many years." That isn't true. Hell, didn't we carry over double digits just recently, within the past couple/few years?

I also said that if people honestly believe that we're going to lock up HT, Collins, Sheard, and Jones PLUS Butler, they are delusional. We already have DMcC making double digit AAV money, so maybe there's room for a couple more. This isn't fantasy football, and would go against the exact philosophy that has allowed the team to remain a consistent winner. By that thinking, one can claim that Jones is likely the most expendable--even if I agree with you that it's probably best to keep him for 2016.

And just because Miguel writes his annual article on how we could potentially keep guys like Revis, Welker, etc doesn't necessarily mean that he believes that will happen, or is suggesting that's the best approach to take. He's simply breaking down various scenarios.

Yeah, those double digit sack years from castoff guys like Mark Anderson and Tully Banta-Cain can never be replicated, right?

I agree with you about Jones' athleticism being rather rare, but there will have to be some type of prioritization involving our future defensive players who are all going to command 10+ million a year on the open market. That will be left up to Belichick to decide, though.

If it were up to me, I'd probably do it, but Belichick may feel differently if he doesn't envision an extension for Jones. By that thinking, yes---Belichick will always take the future year into account, like we've seen many times.

One year at a time.

We have exactly zero cap problems for 2016.

The question is how to structure extensions, and contracts with new players. Obviously we can indeed sign long term agreements with Collins, Hightower, Sheard and Collins. That isn't the issue. The issue is the effect on the 2017 and 2018 caps. If we were to extend ALL of these players, one would likely need to be traded in 2017.

I have haven't seen updated 2017 and 2018 rosters and caps. If we had those, then we could better project.

You are sure regarding how many players can average over $10M. I'm not.

We have an offense that is signed through 2017 except for the obvious need to make OT our draft priority.
Sure, we might add a WR and OG, but these are minor additions.

Our 2016 roster has us paying Hightower and Jones both about $8M.
