Belichick: Kelly's Firing "Really Disappointing" (Mike Reiss Article)

Happy New Year to you Robert

Rob, if Kelly had control of the 53 then that implies that Kelly got rid of Lewis or he had Howie Roseman seek a trade. Either Lewis was going to make the team or not.

Meh. I contend that Lewis was not on the 53 in Aug of 2013. He was on the 90 and we know Chip didn't have control over the 90 at that time but certainly has some input.

McCoy is making like $11 mill a year, he needs to be having more than just a fine season to justify his absurd contract. From that perspective, along with his attitude, were good reasons to move on from him to build your program.

Can you imagine BB having a RB on the roster getting that much money?
BB was quoted as saying most of the ex Iggles aren't doing much in the league. Shady is producing but I do agree that he is not producing at a level to earn his paycheck.

That's not what BB said. Per Reiss:

Belichick w/ support for Chip Kelly GM: "A lot of the players no longer on the Eagles aren't really doing too much for anybody else either."

And he's not wrong.

And surely, Cary Williams, Todd Herremans, Trent Cole, and Evan Mathis (to name just the four non-Maclin/McCoy "big" name departures from last offseason) did not exactly light the world on fire this year. Williams was the league's worst player at his position before getting cut. Herremans was unceremoniously benched by the Colts after Week 2. Cole scarcely made an impact for the Indianapolis defense. Mathis often struggled in his transition to a new offense in Denver. And former safety Nate Allen was alternately injured and ineffective in Oakland.

It's also probably important to note that Jackson sat out half the year with an injury and that McCoy looked like the second best running back on his own team for much of the year (rookie Karlos Williams outplayed Shady, for the most part).

Mcoy wanted to stay in Philly if you remember. Mcoy refused to report to Buffalo for awhile there. Kelly forced him out and Rex opened up the check book.

I said not doing much and he said not doing too much..

BB said "a lot". You morphed that to "most". The first is clearly correct. The second is more arguable. I remember when this discussion first began (I'm talking radio, not here), and some clown spent all his energy pointing to Maclin, McCoy and Jackson, as if they were to only players the Eagles have moved on from.

Foles getting benched isn't some unforeseen event.

QBs changing systems often struggle on new teams. Other times they play better like Carson Palmer

Not to mention, Jackson's season has been decent from the last few weeks. He was hurt and out for most of the early part of the season and there was plenty of talk radio angst that he was taking his sweet time getting back rather than doing everything he could to get back on the field. The Redskins have played really well the last few weeks, and he's been a part of it, but its not like his whole season has been as productive.

The Eagles were right to dump Kelly.

They are a mess with no QB. Bradford isn't the answer and never was.

Maclin, McCoy, Jackson contracts with their new teams

Jackson - 3/24/16
Maclin - 5/55/22.5
McCoy - 5/40/26

This place would go nuts if BB was making those signings, but Kelly's somehow supposed to have made bad decisions by not keeping players getting those numbers?

Kelly tried to get Mariotta. When he was unable to do that, he was screwed, because there were no QBs around for his system. Was he supposed to roll with Foles, who's fallen apart and gotten himself benched in St. Louis?

Yes. That was this year - once Chip assumed complete control.

Yknow....the more I read about how Lurie structures his FO which seemed to lack direct accountability and fosters backstabbing, dysfunction and a steady stream of blame deflection I have no idea who was calling the shots before Lurie officially gave Chip personnel control at the start of 2015.

What a mess.

Yeah, signing Sam Bradford was a savy move right there. Then Tebow and if he didn't pan out you always have Buttfumble Mark Sanchez. I don't fault the Eagles for not letting Kelly near the next Eagles QB. 2013 was a great season for Foles.

The Rams are a mess too. Fischer might get fired.

I hear you. I agree most of the inherited personnel that Chip jettisoned were justified- even culture killers like DJax and Shady.

My point is that those players should not be included in BBs assessment.

Is astounds my how Jeff Fisher is still employed. He stabs Floyd Reese in TN and then the team goes to hell under his regime.

DJax is a front runner. Always has been

WTF, Kelly traded Foles and a 2nd round pick to St Louis for injury prone Sam Bradford.

Explains why his team has 6 wins and why the franchise is going south under his rule.

You are shocked that the Dan Snyder would spend money recklessly?

Maclin has played a huge role in KC making the post season with the opportunity to win their 1st playoff game in 20 years. Looks like money well spent to me. After Kelly forced McCoy out Rex was ready to spend to the hilt.

Tell'em how you feel, Bill! He only has 6 Super Bowl rings and 9 Super Bowl appearances, what does he know?

Belichick: Eagles' Kelly firing 'really disappointing'

["I'd say it's really disappointing. I mean, Chip Kelly, to me, is a really good football coach. He does a great job and he's done a great job with that team," Belichick said in an expansive news conference. "Pretty much everyone is on a one-year contract in this league. I don't know how you build a program in one year. ... Chip is a great coach. He'll end up somewhere and will do a great job there."

Also, as it relates to Kelly's personnel acumen, which had come under scrutiny, Belichick added, "I'd say a lot of the players that were on the Eagles, that are no longer on the Eagles, aren't really doing too much for anybody else either."]

People don't remember but Vince Lombardi was under discussion for firing in the 2nd and 3rd years of his regime with the Packers. Players were *****in' about his gruesome practices and shifting of players like Paul Hornung the All-American Golden Boy hero from Notre Dame and the first pick in the draft, from QB to RB.

Owner Art Modell fired both Paul Brown and Bill Belichick. How dumb can you be?

There was grumbling about Bill Beleichick after his first year and 5-11 record with the Patriots too. Idiocy !!!!

Not sure I totally agree with BB here. Jackson, Shady and Maclin are having fine seasons.

Jackson - 30 rec, 528 yds, 4 TD - That's 50 catches, 800 yds and 5 TD off his last (and best) year in Philly

McCoy - 895 yds rushing (4.4ypc), 292 yds receiving, That's 400 yards fewer rushing (150 more receiving) and the same amount of TDs, from his last year in Philly. That's also 700 yards fewer rushing, 250 yards fewer receiving and 6 fewer TDs from his best year in Philly (2013)

Maclin - 84 rec, 1034 yds, 7TD - That's the same amount of catches, 300 yards and 3 fewer TDs than his last year (and best year) in Philly.

Jackson - 2nd year of a 4/$24 million contract ($16 million guaranteed) - First year of 3 straight $9.25million cap hits.
McCoy - First year of a 5/$40 million contract ($26.5 million guaranteed)
Maclin - First year of a 5/$55 million contract ($22.5 million guaranteed)

Belichick overstated a bit, but he's right in the fact that none of them are really near their career years, save for Maclin, and he's making $11 million/yr.

That's ignoring those who have totally tanked like Trent Cole and everyone's binky here Evan Mathis.
