Very interesting if you look at the Pats staff. Most have a similar background that is fundamentally different from most of their colleagues around the league. They are all very smart. They didn't play football at big time schools. They all have a huge passion for the game. They didn't play in the NFL,(I think they have just one former NFL player on the staff), and most of them entered the league at th lowest rung (QC assistants) with the Pats. (I think they have just one assistant that came to them from outside the organization - Googs)
One of the most important and least talked about of BB's vast skills, is his ability to coach and develop good coaches. In this age specialization and unlimited budgets, the Pats have the smallest staff in the league, and at this stage of his tenure with the Pats, most of it is home grown. Talk about being on the same page.
As a former coach at the game's lower levels, I am constantly amazed by Bill Bellichick and just how GOOD he is at his job. This article points out one of his greatest and under reported skills. The fact that he has constantly has changed with the times. He never allowed himself to be wedded to any offense or defensive system. AND he never allowed himself to be wedded to one side of the ball, like a Rex Ryan. Few people remember that Tom Brady;s QB coach in the very formative first 3 years of his career was BB. So it is not surprising that he is likely to have the only DC in the league who spent the first few years of of coaching his NFL careercoaching the OL.
Think about the thought process that made BB decide to put an OL assistant from RPI to lead a LB room that included seasoned vets like Colvin, Bruschi, Vrabel, and Seau. Talk about an outside the box personnel decisio......and it worked. Now THAT is a genius move.
It was nice that Jeff Howe took the time to write an article on Patricia. It is about time we got one. Good to find out things I didn't know about him. There is a lot more I would have liked to have known. It was a good article, not a great one.
