Given How the Final Quarter Went, Belichick Made the Right Call

Since you say stats are irrelevant then let's forget about it and look at reality.

The defense couldn't stop the jets and our offense didn't even get a chance to get on the field, plus we didn't even get a chance to decide which end to defend, which wasn't even important because the weather was good and the kickers were doing well. At least if we receive we get one possession. And since our defense was playing well they get a few minutes to rest and make any adjustments. If this was a playoff game we would have to wait 6 months to play football again. At least give the offense and ourselves a chance, even if they sucked, let them try, that's the only obvious thing about this.

I look at the reality Pats offense had one drive all day when they moved the ball. That drive the Jets didn't attack like they did all game long and let the Pats have more time. Still took 4th down conversions to even get that chance. The Pats defense was playing much better than the offense.

Pats took ball against Denver and went 3 and out and gave Denver a short field to work. Belichick was relying on his defense to get a stop and the defense failed to stop. The game is played with 3 units and need all three units to win. The offense massively failed in regulation.

If they went for 2 and missed the second guessing would have been a million times worse than this kickoff second quessing.

Still would have been the more sensible thing to do. Who know how long we gotta keep our guys on field in OT risking further injuries for something we can attain next week...if we even need that 1 seed, anyways.

This is one of the great NON-stories of the year. I can't believe how much press it's gotten. This is just one of those coaching decisions where both sides have excellent and reasonable points of view. BB's call was a bit unusual, but only a bit. So what that it didn't work out. He's made a ton of calls that haven't worked out. Why is this so shocking.

What makes this so strange isn't that BB made a bad call, it's that he makes bad calls significantly less than his peers. ALL HC's make bad calls (or calls that don't work out.)

You mean the same 4th quarter where the pats matched down and got a TD? Gronk and Brady are the best at their position in the game and yet BB had no faith in them to win the game in OT.

If you are looking for a lack of trust on Belichick part look at the OL, one sack and the Patriots would have been screwed.

I understand the logic for why he chose to kick the ball. However, the real problem is that by kicking, the team took a chance that they may never see the ball....Which is what happened.

You take the ball and put the pressure on the other team to match you...Sure, the offense was not moving the ball well all game, but the Jets were very close on big plays all game long, it isn't like the Patriots were doing a great job of stopping the Jets, it was just Fitzpatrick overthrowing his receivers.

The Patriots still could have went 3 and out and then the Jets could have scored a field goal...but in that event, nobody would have questioned the decision. Belichick made a bold call and lost.

Who gives a **** if someone questions the decision or not as long as it is a sound one.

I'd rather have coach that actually goes with what he perceives to be the better odds than someone who is to afraid to go away from the script to not look bad. Always going with the more favorable scenario doesn't mean that you will win every time but that you put yourself into a better chance to win. In the end that's the only thing coaches can do because ultimately almost all games are decided by individual errors of players.
