Here's my take:
This may sound strange, but winning the Superbowl is a regular occurrence. Someone will win the Super Bowl every year. It WILL happen again this Feb. That is why an undefeated season is something to strive toward. It is something that is very far above and beyond just winning a Super Bowl. That's why it never has happened since 1972. I don't remember every team that's won the Super Bowl even the last 15 years. Can't name them. It's too common for that. But an undefeated super bowl champ though... that is for eternity. I don't understand people saying "who cares about an undefeated season, the real goal is just to win the super Bowl". Going undefeated is hard, and that's why it's amazing and unforgettable in the annals of human achievement. Go ahead and set your sights on the Super Bowl. I'm right there with you, but if you have a chance (13-0?) to win out and go for it all, I say seize the day. I'm cool with the 16-0 banner, even with the heartbreak at the end, because I believe the team had a responsibility to go for it all when they were that close. The fact that no one else has done it in a 16 game season is testament enough to the difficulty. I'm proud that the Patriots went for it all, despite the outcome.
