Steven Jackson!

Disclaimer-Huge Steven Jackson fan here.

His 2014 stats don't shout out to me "washed up". 190 carries for 707 yards with 20 receptions for 148 yards. Even at 3.7 yards a carry, which he averaged in 2014, he would have been a 1,000 plus rusher last year if they kept feeding him the ball the average of his 10 year career. I don't think the Falcons used him enough.

His reception total in 2014 was less than half that he averaged throughout his career. Now he has the GOAT throwing to him and Brady needs a quick option. It's what the Pats have been missing without Lewis and Edelman. He's exactly what we need.

Just for fun I took Steven Jackson's 2014 stats and Devonta Freeman's stats this year. I then adjusted Jackson't stats to what he hypothetically would have gained if he had the same amount of opportunities as Freeman has had this year based on Jackson's 2014 average yards per carry/catch. This is the hypothetical outcome:

2015 Devonta Freeman
218 rushing attempts for 907 yards
68 receptions for 543 yards

2014 Steven Jackson (Adjusted)
218 attempts for 807 yards
68 receptions for 503 yards

I think Christmas came a little early for us guys. I can't wait to see him play.

...excellent analysis... reasonable projection... must control urge to....

...overreact.

I think it's interesting that Freeman really didn't do any better than Jackson did last year when they shared the backfield. I think Atlanta restricted Jackson's carries more to get the other RBs a look because they knew they would be moving on from SJ at the end of the year. They probably had a pretty good sense that Freeman would be the starter this year. No sense in running SJ into the ground when they had another capable back on the roster.

That being said, SJ still looked slow even if he was just as productive as Freeman. Plus, no other team thought he had enough left to sign him this year. It's not like we pulled one over on the NFL. He was available.

Overall, I think his RB skills make up for the drop in speed. It will be really interesting to see what he can do with a healthy Patriots offense. If he can avg 4 ypc, be a solid pass protector and be a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield, that could be a huge weapon. Teams will have to respect him out there. It really could be a difference maker.

IMO both Bolden and Iosefa were getting yards that Blount wasn't getting. I have high hopes that somone who has elite RB intangibles like Jackson will make more than the guys we've been fielding, despite the fact that he's slowed considerably. I'd still bet on him to take out Iosefa by a good margin in a footrace. He did run a 4.45 when he was younger. I doubt he's fallen off *that* much. Maybe a 4.7 now? He had big time burst out of his cuts when he was younger.

I have gone back and watched all of the Pats games and I will say, for the most part, Blount played well. What he could not do was make the first person miss the way Lewis did. But if the blocking was good, Blount got his yards. In many games, the blocking was terrible.

Lewis was amazing. He got yards because he could juke anyone out of their shoes. His play as a running back was exceptional. He was truly magical.

I do find it odd that I can't even find a mention of this on NFL.com or ESPN.com's main page. I mean, it's not the biggest news of the week, but the #1 seed signing a borderline HoF RB should at least merit a headline or a blurb *somewhere*.

Did this deal go south, or something? All of a sudden it's not on any websites?

Freeman's value this year was mainly driven by the fact that early in the season he scored a ton of TDs. He hit the wall hard though, right around the same time the team as a whole did, and hasn't been all that great for quite a while now.

Jackson updated his twitter profile, as far as I'm concerned that's more official than ESPN's 'reporting' anyway.

Also, ESPN did put this up yesterday, probably just didn't feel the need to update/finalize, at least until final contract figures are known: Source: Injury-riddled Pats to sign RB Jackson

New England Patriots sign Steven Jackson - NFL.com

Just hasn't been announced yet.

I do wonder if the team is irked w SJax tweeting that he has signed.

I think the team is thinking long and hard about who to kick off the active roster.

The new twist Jackson brings that I'm most interested in seeing develop is the notion of a 1st/2nd down back that offers a quality receiving threat.

I think Lewis did offer that, and Bolden does as well, but I think the Pats see them both more as hybrid backs than early-down guys. It's definitely a departure from Blount and Ridley in a pretty big way.

I saw it yesterday, too. But now it's off the front page at both sites.

It is a little bush league to announce before the team since now there's a bunch of guys in the Pats lockerroom waiting for a pink slip. Not a big deal in the long run, I certainly get his excitement, but he could've handled better.

I'm looking forward to the report that he's on the practice field.

Ah. I see what you are saying. Yes- I agree.

Any further questions?

The Blount bashing by some is really annoying. He was on a pace for a 800 yd season @ 4+yds a carry.

People are excited over Buzz Lightyear and forget that Woody is a pretty cool toy as well.

Agreed. Plus one more thing, do not fumble.

I'm hoping for Jackson to be...

...a huge hit.

Blount was a little annoying to watch at times. He missed a lot of yards, but it's also easy to miss this fact that he created yards where a lot of other backs wouldn't have. He was definitely a serviceable back. Hopefully SJ can pick that up and more.
