From the Mag: How Malcolm Butler became indispensable for the Pats

The kid ran a 4.6 at Alabama's pro day (the small school portion) and was left heart broken. Teams stopped calling. He goes from unwanted to making the most clutch defensive play in super bowl history. The piece chronicles his journey.

It's ESPN but it's worth the click. Enjoy

As much as I despise Jackie and BSPN....it was very good.

Pure gold here...

Throughout the season, Revis, the four-time All-Pro, stressed to Butler the importance of breaking down film, of refining his technique, of continuing to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. Revis imparted this advice knowing he could well be grooming his potential replacement.

He'd seen the potential early: Before Butler had even taken a snap in uniform, or, for that matter, before he even made the 53-man roster, Revis tracked him in training camp, turning to a team member and remarking, "That kid is the best defensive back out here."

Great read. Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, now I'll have to go wash my eyes, rinse my mouth out and do mental exercises to flush any sort of imprint that was subliminally sent to me by ESPN. Yuck.

Seriously though. It does make you wonder how much more reassuring it was for BB to secretly observe the tutelage of Butler by Revis and what had been passed on. It would appear that it was all part of BB's nefarious plan the whole time and in the end stick it to the Jets with a bloated contract that will screw them for a few years.

There have been a couple of articles recently that have talked about BB's harshness towards Malcolm when he missed his flight for OTAs. Understanding more where Malcolm came from and the immediacy of his stardom, BB pulled out all the stops to make sure his development stayed on its current path and making absolutely sure his head didn't get too big.

I think is also was a, 'Just because this guy won the SB for us doesn't mean he receives special treatment.', message to the team.

Agreed. It's been remarked often around here how Revis impacted Butler's career for the better. If he showed Butler the importance of film study, then that's why Butler took the strides he did at the end of 2014 and why his career trajectory can only go up from here. I wonder what he ran in the .40 when the Patriots clocked him the second time.

There were several of us on this board who had sworn that we read somehwere that Malcolm ran a 4.45 during his workout here in Foxboro. It was an article either in the Herald or NESN....

I've been Ben Voogling for the link and have come up empty.

It's possible nobody remembers. Could by why there's conflicting numbers.

- More impressive than the one Super Bowl play is how he went from 4th corner last year to #1 corner all season long. Very impressive
- Who cares about 40speed. Butler is said to have amazing catch up speed and also good playing speed. He also has instincts and play recognition off the charts

If you were "Ben Voogling" correctly you would have found something because the first rule of "Ben Voogling" is if you can't find anything concrete, make it up and claim it is somewhere on the internet.

Hey....did you know that 87.4% of all facts are not factual at all?

Doesn't Jackie MacMullan have something else to write, such as an opinion piece that Brady should reach out to Roger Goodell to see if Goodell wants a full body massage from him?

It was the 2/24/15 MMQB article by Emily Kaplan. Said he ran a 4.4

I can sleep at night now. Thank you.

Simpson remembers finagling Butler, who played his final two years of college at Division II West Alabama, into Alabama’s pro day last spring. Nearly half of the NFL’s 32 teams had a rep there, but Butler ran a 4.6 and Simpson never received a single text, email or call from anyone. The draft came and went, and still no call. Simpson felt awful, but as he sat at his dining room table formulating plans to set Butler up for the CFL, the phone finally rang. It was Josh Boyer, New England’s cornerbacks coach, offering a tryout. Butler got on a plane that evening, ran a 4.4 and the Patriots signed him to a free-agent contract.

I don't MyBook or Instatweet....

Seriously I took 30 seconds to look...I didn't get the results I wanted and gave up.
See, there's your problem. Proper Vooglin is not taking 30 seconds to research, which reporter has time for stuff like that? Proper Vooglin is betting your life on that "I'm feeling lucky" button

  • Jackie Mac is outstanding at human interest/bio stories.
  • She's competent at generic sports reporting.
  • She's lousy at analysis.
For some years now she's been focusing mainly on what she's best at. The exceptions have not been pretty.

Interesting line in the article. Butler calls Pat's Scout Jourdain, "I need you to get me a shot," he said. "I wouldn't be on the phone with you if I didn't think you deserved one," Jourdain answered. (The Patriots would not make Jourdain available for this story.)
Gee, I don't understand why the Pats wouldn't want to talk to ESPN?

It's a good article but 1 or 2 days behind the awesome Bleacher Report article on Malcolm. To be honest MacMullen rehashes almost the same article and points. I almost feel like ESPN read the Bleacher article and then Had MacMullen hastily play catch up
