I dont either. Its not ironic nor clever. Its 8 year old humor (it is the Carolinas after all) . My theory:

The poor Panthers finally came out of the gate smoking with an undefeated record. Unfortunately 3 other teams are doing the same and its greatly diluting the attention the Panthers would have gotten if they were the lone 7-0 team.

So develop some cutesy/dumb conspiracy (like this one) and the team gets max attention because everyone will want to take part in this oh so clever and funny thing.

I think it's HYSTERICAL. Maybe it has something to do with the family you grew up in. Once my mom tried to convince me we'd become Jehovah Witnesses and weren't celebrating Christmas anymore. So I called her best friend to confirm and she played along. Eventually I figured it out. I was 7.

Actually if I saw Panthers fans flipping out and going crazy about it I would have thought that was really funny. So I think it was more that I was not exposed to the reactions of the fans.

I would have if I saw Panthers fan flipping. I diddnt. Otherwise it seemed too innocuous for me. Plenty of other posters here felt the same way, but again might not have seen the fans

Being from North Carolina, I can tell you there's a frenzy about Carolina's 7-1 start this season. Here in the triangle, some Duke and UNC Bball fans have gone as far as trying to find out what city they play in.

Not that it matters, but the joke is, there's about ten Panthers fans in the state. It's college Bball and immigrants from other NFL cities. They aren't really sure they're undefeated. You could probably list Bronco Nagurski at full back and no one would notice.

UPDATE: This morning I got an email from someone named Neil Jones with the subject line “People are just reporting the facts.” It reads:

“We don’t need ESPN to tell us some false truth. We know the panthers are 6-1 and we are just trying to get the truth out there. 6-1 is still great!”

I asked who the Panthers “lost” to. The response:

“The Colts on monday or were you not paying attention? That ball came off Gano’s foot all wrong. Only Disney’s digital trickery put that ball through the uprights. We could sit back and accept that a win in a win, but are we really going to let this be the status quo?? I think its a slippery slope, even if it does benefit our panthers in the short term. anyways hope this helps!”
