The Defense post Jets thread

A lot of talk about the O and rightly so. It was the hero today and scored 30 (arguably should have been more) vs what is no less than a top 3 D and very arguably the best overall and did so with a few starters out.

I want to talk about the less fun side of the equation. The Patriots Offense did not give up any short fields and the Patriots D allowed 23 points and gave the offense 1 TO that turned into 3 points.

What are your thoughts about it?

Obviously a lot of the conversation will start and end with third down. A lot of good plays then a lot of smh plays. Keep in mind the Jets O is not the worst in the league. They scored 25.8 PPG coming into today and it is not like a lot of them are pick 6 points. They tend to get them with their O converting in the red zone.

Keeping that in mind what do you think?

They will probably get one. But I think Butler and Ryan overall did okay. It was Butler's first time facing a WR like Decker and IIRC he did most of his damage in the first half. In the 2nd half Decker didn't get as many catchers or yards (could be wrong) so I think Butler started to adjust. Decker really plays WR like a mini-TE which is unusual.

Ryan has had 3 back to back good games. Didn't shut down Marshall and had a little help but overall I will take that out come every time.

The run defense was very good. A lot will bring up the Ivory injury but frankly the biggest thing was the DL was not blown off the line and the LBs (particularly Hightower) held great gap discipline.

Chung just had his game of the year so far. A lot of people complained about his contract (I was one too) but so far he is playing like one of the top 10 SS in the NFL. He deserves pro-bowl consideration (I never thought I'd say that about him)

Coleman simply is not ready. However I have to say in generally Fitz played a very good game too. Besides the Nink tipped passes he didn't miss often and was able to force guys free due to his ability to run. When he did throw he rarely missed and was often making impressive throws. He had his best game of the year he never made a bad decision while being under pressure (until that last pass over the middle to end the game... i thought that was a highly questionable play).

The jets had the #1 running offense and our game plan was to stop the run and they did a great job of it. In doing so we were likely to give up passing yards and they did. I like our defense and say what you want but the jets have a good offense with two legit #1 receivers and fitz is a good QB. We should have had some ints too but if shoulds and ifs counted we would have had at least 40 points.

Barring injuries, our defense will only get better as the year goes on. You could dig up threads from this time last year about our defense not being up to people's standards and that was with Revis and Browner.

We'll need to do better but I think sheard being out played a big role. Fitzpatrick played a great game and seemed way too in control, that could change with sheard in there. Also bb tends to hold back in the regular season and easley/brown should only improve. Otherwise the secondary held up pretty decent especially Ryan who is probably the key right now, assuming Butler stays solid in his role.

The third down conversions just made it look worse. fitzpatrick only completed 56% of his passes,

Taking out that last drive where they got the fg he was 51% for 240 yards with a 7 yards per attempt average.

The secondary is only built to last so long, as any pretty good QB with time to throw will pick apart defenses. The real issue was the blatant holds by Jets Oline that were never called. Think about how many flags were thrown against the Colts because our D-Line was dominating them. That should have happened this game too.

Contain Fitz in the pocket and things look different. We smushed the runnig game, Ivory had 2.4 a carry. The Cs and chung actually came up clutch in the end.

Why torture yourself over a less than all pro secondary when the front seven could be outstanding and there's plenty of safety help?

If you go to the Jets forums it is all about the Pats cheated and the refs helped them. Bunch of sore losers

I think they could shut out a team and some fans would still hitch about how they didn't execute

The game would have been very different if Ninkovich or Butler had secured a few of those INTs... were there for the taking. Even if they didn't turn into points, it would have put Fitz and their O into a different mindset. As mentioned, the Pats removed their Jets running game, and if they were able to turn the ball over in the passing game, I think they would have tried to go back to the run.

Give the Jets some credit. That's a playoff caliber team. Some point recently, the Jets became a legitimate team. Getting rid of Rex has removed the clownish idiocy that has typified the Jets recently. Suddenly, the Jets are focused, disciplined and effective, with the same players that looked like morons.

Well, they started by bringing in good secondary talent to an already stifling defense (Revis, Cromartie, Skrine).

They then added better skill position players like Marshall and 2nd round pick Smith, to go with Decker. They already had a good running game with Ivory and Powell. They also replaced that joke of a loser QB in Geno Smith with a veteran journeyman presence who isn't nearly as bad as some posters here act. Fitzpatrick isn't "good," but he's "good enough" to get the job done--particularly with viable receiving threats and a controlled role (strong defense + running game = game manager).

Bringing in a solid defensive mind in Todd Bowles as the HC was the icing on the cake. This current team is leaps and bounds better than the past couple of seasons, and even then, those poor teams were keeping our match ups close every season.

Coleman had a couple solid breakups - he's a JAG, but earning his reps. Rashaan Melvin got some reps today but I can't say that I noticed him. Anyone see anything out of him?
