Rappaport: CB Tarell Brown foot injury: [10/17 Update - - IR'ed]

Unfortunately I think the Pats will be rebuilding the secondary on the fly this season. Fortunately they don't face too many good offenses the rest of the year until the playoffs but they need at least one other CB besides Butler to step up.

The other 3 positions are locked down and fine and they have players who can play slot and dime. They need a reliable CB2 who can play man and zone.

That is not rebuilding the secondary

A trade is necessary unless we really decide to gamble on what we currently have. All you need is an injury to Butler or McCourty and we are in deep deep trouble back there.
 
I vote we trade our 2106 #1 pick for a CB

Seriously, I think we have to do something. This will/could be our downfall as far as trying to repeat. It was a pretty big weakness before Brown's injury, now it's really bad.
The strange thing is how bad has it really performed? I mean look what it did without Brown vs. the Jaguars. Yes it was the Jags but Bortles has actually been able to garner up alot of yards passing this season and we were able to pretty much hold it to a minimum with Coleman as a starter.

Something will need to be done or someone will have to step up, but come to think of it it might not be as bad as people are making it out to be.
 
Its not 2004 whenBB could just plug in dB's and tell em to mug receivers 15 yards down field.. Guys gotta have some modicum of talent...first week pats face a competent qb could be telling...luck for all his below avg play this season is best they've faced...better than rothelsomething w/o top receiver/rb
 
I liked Brown, this is too bad. Barring a trade I would expect Fletcher back when he's healthy.

Agreed. Keep in mind we've had times where none of our positions back there were locked down.
 
jeez, i didnt think it was possible for our cornerbacks to get even worse..
the one thing bill screwed up this season..

coleman, melvin, logan ryan with SB hero malcom butler. any decent qb with decent protection will pick these guys to pieces

I know people will scream - not my preference either - but I agree with the post above and expect Fletcher back. Was he injured?
 
Past recent Super Bowl winning squads plugged random corners into their system and it worked. Look at Baltimore in 2012, for example. Having a strong front seven will help with that. People have to remember a big part of our secondary woes over the years was due to a lack of pass rush much of the time.

It's funny you mention him because I talked to him a few days ago. He's coaching at his alma mater - Grady High in Atlanta - and struck up a conversation with me when he saw me in a Patriots jersey (my kids go there). Super nice guy who loved his cup of coffee with the Pats.
 
Brown has been very solid, but why are people ignoring the fact that he has not played much in recent weeks and the defense has still performed well?

The biggest issue is the depth. Hopefully the rest of the guys in the secondary can stay healthy.

I think almost every NFL team can say that.

2011 was I think the most tumultuous where you had players moving around and working at McDonaldsthe Tuesday before gameday.
