Trade for the Beast: CB Justin Gilbert

Apart from big question marks around his ability at NFL level, the Browns wont give him away for a 4th round pick and we would (and should) not offer anything higher.

I really wanted them to trade for Mo Claiborne. He looks great so far this year and would only be a one year rental like Talib, but I think he could still be available and give us that one player that is missing.

Agreed--well put. It makes little sense for either team, and he has both on/off the field issues.

I would peg him as a poor man's Logan Ryan right now, albeit with a higher ceiling, should he ever come close to reaching it.

Unfortunately for CLE, it seems to be yet another bad decision, in a very long line of them.

Claiborne has looked better through 2 games, although Philly and Sam Bradford didn't exactly present much of a challenge with their putrid offensive showing. I think we need to wait before drawing much of a conclusion just yet.

Week one saw the NYG hang 26, although I'm not sure of the specifics regarding Claiborne's assignments. Either way, I think you're right that he may have improved, although think of how low the bar was set!

Really interesting idea. I was impressed by what I saw in the Giants game. He's far more proven and reliable than Gilbert. And I wouldn't be surprised if Nick Caserio was actually scouting Claiborne as we speak. Because Dez and Romo will be out for their injuries, I'm sure the Cowboys are at least wondering if losing another player via a trade, would make much of a difference. They're not going to make the playoffs, and losing a couple of extra games might actually help them in the upcoming draft. Who knows?!

Cowboys are 2-0 and are in the NFC East. The rest of the teams in the East are terrible. Even without Romo for a while, the Cowboys have a good shot at making the playoffs.

If they are determined to make the playoffs, they can. Like you said, it's a weak division.

But I'm basing my assumption on this graphic:

EDIT: Want to clarify that this is my ideal scenario of how a trade would play out. Not saying this would happen though
They traded for Matt Cassell and they are 2-0 in a weak division. I absolutely think that they can reach the playoffs, and they seem to think so too. Otherwise they wouldn't have traded for a QB. They would have just picked up some random free agent backup instead. I don't see the benefits for the Cowboys to trade away Claiborne.

FPI seems like another crappy ESPN stat, like their QBR which is awful. I'm not going to give it much weight in my thoughts on who will make the playoffs. For example, they give the Pats just a 50,2% chance to win the division(before the bills game). Even before the Bills game I would have sayd that the chance is higher.

You're totally right. If the Cowboys are determined to make the playoffs, then they probably will. I was just hoping they didn't, so we could get Claiborne for a one-year rental

Damn you Revis! Damn you to hell!!!!!!

OK. What is the graphic basis it's data on?

The Football Power Index (FPI) is supposed to represent how many points above or below average a team is. According to ESPN, the results in that graphic are based on 10,000 simulations, results to date, and the strength of the remaining schedule.

The Cowboys aren't just going to give up and start giving away good players....

They had a 51% chance of beating NE w/o Dez?

It would appear so my friend. But I wouldn't read too much into this. Like all simulations, it has its flaws and fails to account for certain things.

Can the Cowboys pull off a playoff run? Most definitely. But this is what the FPI system calculates

So the Falcons are least likely to make the playoffs than the Cowboys according to that chart or am I reading it backwards. That doesn't make any sense.

I also believe that DAL can weather this and make the playoffs. They can go 10-6 maybe even 9-7 and get in.

I thought it was the other way around, the Cowboys only having a 61% to get in. But then I don't get why CIN would only have a 66% chance, they've looked good enough and have made a wild card spot plenty of times recently.

Going back to the topic....

Strap and Brown seem to be the two best cover guys on the team. They are not elite cover guys but IMO are fine. Malcolm has upside and Brown knows what he is doing. If one of them goes down we are screwed.

That leaves Ryan and Fletcher. Both IMO are very questionable bordering on disastrous in man coverage.

With that said I am sick of hearing that "all we need is a slot CB that can cover in short spaces"... NO! The team needs another Cb that can cover in tight man all over the field period. How many times last night did Beckham start his routes from the slot? How many deep balls did SEA complete to WRs that lined up in the slot? Answer: A bunch.

I kinda want to see Justin Coleman play before the team starts making trades. As others have said, he can't possibly be worse than Fletcher.
