Eric Allen (NFL Live) Rates Patriots Secondary Best in League

Just watching NFL and they had a countdown of the top secondaries from the opinion of former CB Eric Allen. The list had teams like Denver, Jacksonville, and Baltimore, but he put he had the Patriots at number one.

I think we was assuming that Samuel would be back, though. He said between Samuel, a healthy Harrison, and our new draft pick Meriweather, a secondary that allowed just TEN passing TDs last year should be even better.

Nice . . . I'm more concerned about Rodney staying healthy and Meriweather being able to be an upgrade over Wilson than Samuel playing . . . at $500K per game, he's playing.

Harrison and Wilson at safety, Samuel and Hobbs at corner, and Meriweather as a hybrid S/CB...that ain't bad at all. Plus, they'll all look even better with the front seven bringing the heat.

This is madness. We have no true shutdown corner, our other corner is really just a nickelback, we have no heir apperaent to our injury-prone strong safety, Eugene Wilson looks lost out there, and Artrell Hawkins is too old.

Allen is clearly overrating Meriweather.

I'm hoping Wilson and Meriweather will be reversed from your plan. Wilson had always been a CB and I think it showed. I don't think he's an instinctual S when it comes to reading play action, etc. A lifetime S like Meriweather should so a lot better in that area.

Meriweather's the starting FS, and Wilson's playing hybrid CB/S this year.

Give me the best front seven and I'll take my chances with the secondary. Seems like they did alright in '03 and '04 without the "best" secondary.

I kinda agree with this post with the exception of the Meriweather overrated part. I've listened to Eric Allen before & he doesn't seem to ever make sense. I think he just goes along with the trendy pick which happens to be us this year. I believe he was among the many at ESPN who brilliantly picked Miami to take the AFC East last season.

Jacksonville has the best secondary IMO with Baltimore a close 2nd.

Shocking!

There are a lot of assumptions about this secondary if you are going to rate them #1 in the NFL. First of all, you have to assume that Samuel isn't just a one year wonder and he won't hold out or get traded. Second, the admitted assumption that Rodney Harrison will stay healthy. Third, Eric Allen throws Tory James out there as if that means much of anything, which he assumes it does (must be because they played together). Fourth, that Meriweather actually plays and plays well.

I'm not going to knock Hobbs by saying that he is a nickle corner because so was Assante Samuel. Hobbs is the underdog in the secondary. He won't get any respect behind Samuel, Meriweather is a first round pick and Hobbs is chilling behind the rest of accomplished individuals in the secondary (ie Harrison, James and Wilson). If Hobbs (and even James Sanders) step up half as much as Samuel did last year, this could be a great secondary.

All that said, I'll take McAllister and Ed Reed or the combo of Dre Bly and Champ Bailey. Crap, Bailey and the Pats' Hawkins could make a top five secondary.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about when it concerns Meriweather, sorry. Also, while Samuel isn't a true shutdown corner he's started to show signs of being one of the better corners in the league, and in the Patriots system he's developing into one of the best CB's in the league.

Denver has good cornerbacks but their safeties don't impress me at all. Jacksonville has Mathis, Darius, and Nelson. They have big names, but I think they don't always live up to their potential.

Again like Samuel he seems to be developing into one of the better CB's in the league, but at this point I'm starting to think Samuel has the edge. Prior to the '06 season I would have given the edge to Mathis.)

S Darius, Donovin (He's had more injury problems than Rodney lately, and hasn't really done anything since 2004)

S Gattis, Josh (Some of us thought he was among the better Safety prospects coming out. Now, why did so many teams pass on him for a large part of the draft? either he'll prove us right, or there's a reason they all passed on him, we'll see.)

S Nelson, Reggie (A lot of us thought he had skills, but also thought he was dumb as rocks. Reggie isn't that great of a tackler (especially at wrapping up), and he isn't that good against the run.)
