The only way to find guilt is to say everyone is lying. The only way to CREDIBLY say everyone is lying is to have EVIDENCE TO CONTRADICT. There is no evidence to contradict. The only 'evidence' is Wells interpretation of texts, which the texter and recipient explained and he called a lie.
Under that standard everyone is guilty of everytihng.

Oh I think it can certainly refer to weight loss and thay syncing of the text is amazing, but ultimately it's a weak defense in this case given how out of control this has all gotten.

If it's true, it's true. Not all truths are monumental.

As for the idea that it's a weak defense, that depends on what they have to support the assertion. If it's demonstrably the truth, it's as strong a defense as you can get.

We had to put something out there.

If the weight loss explanation is not true, and they know it's not true, it stands to reason (given the caliber of the people involved in this case) that they could have rationalized a better explanation. They didn't.
