PATRIOTS DRAFT: The List Of 2nd Round Picks During the Belichick Era

Ian Logue

As we get set for night two, here's a look at the list of Patriots picks from the second round since 2000.

Interesting list. Although there were some who didn't pan out, at the time I thought each of them was a good pick. I was especially hopeful for Adrian Klem. Shows what I know, eh?

Honestly, though, the draft is always a crapshoot. You can do all the due diligence you want, but until the guy gets to camp and puts on the pads, it's hard to know whether he'll be a great find, or just another guy.

I would say just judging by memory the Pats tend to be one of the worst teams in the 2nd round. They have had some massive hits but a lot of misses. They say about 50% of 2nd rounders pan out and they are below that mark IMO. Hopefully this means the ship will right itself. and we hit this year.

Also it could be the fact that a low 2nd round pick and high 2nd pick are just a huge difference. I know the top 1st round picks to bottom 1st are a big difference too but they are still top players.

I can agree with most of that. I always feel like the first part of the second round is where all those desirable guys fall. Once you hit the latter part of the second, the picks who are usually available don't look as amazing anymore. It makes sense to me that those drafting top half of second round would have a greater chance at cashing in.

I'd actually have the Pats hitting at roughly 50% on those 2nd rounders. We're not talking a proliferation of pro bowlers there, but there are plenty of good rotation players there. I'm also not taking into account the guys we just drafted. I figure accounting for their return so soon would be a bit exaggerated.

I always find it interesting when people say that the Patriots haven't been good in the 2nd round. Have they had some missed? Yep.. Notably, Ras-I Dowling, Ron Brace, Darius Butler.

But let's look at the players who made it through their 1st contract:

Matt Light, Deion Branch, Bethel Johnson, Eugene Wilson, Patrick Chung, Sebastian Vollmer, Rob Gronkowski, Brandon Spikes, Shave Vereen, Tavon Wilson and Jamie Collins.

Aaron Dobson and Jimmy Garappolo the jury is still out on.

11 out of 19.. Pretty sure that is better than most of the rest of the league..

Tonight's 2nd-rounder just added another weight to the Miss side of the scale.

It will be, as will his 2nd year, 3rd year, and 4th & final year, if he even makes it that far.

Should cut him to free up some cap space.

Edit: Actually, is it just me or have people been even more critical of this pick than normal. You guys are making me a bit worried about it.

After the Brown pick I was certain we would win the Super Bowl. Now with the Richards pick I am certain we are looking at a 7-8-1 season at best.
I think a quip contained in the writings of Dostoevsky says it best: "Nyet! I just can't take it anymore!"
