Stevie Johnson likely to sign with Pats [3/17 update: signs w/ San Diego]

Well they sure didn't think so this year.

They've addressed multiple positions, so you might wish to re-think your position.

Okay, but free agency isn't done yet and there's a draft. Throwing big money at JAGs who are maybe marginally better but significantly more expensive than the JAGs already on your roster is what a lot of teams do in free agency; see how that worked out for the aforementioned Buccaneers.
I get your point with the draft, but FA talent has greatly dwindled. We can't fill all those needs in the draft. Maybe 2-3 tops. This isn't 2011 where we had three picks in the top 33.

Filling needs isn't as static as "This is our #1 need, we will fill this first -- any way possible." You have to take into combination talent available, cap space, available, free agency and the draft.

So basically what I'm saying is, In Bill We Trust.

^^ this. How come it is so hard to comprehend that a) a player needs to want to come here at most likely a bit of a discount and b) may not be a fit schematically, financially or physically. Chandler makes the team better. That cannot be disputed. Matched with Gronk, he'll be even better. G, CB, DT are all needs. There is the draft and what's remaining of free agency and veteran training camp cuts. They've won 4 Super Bowls in 14 years. I don't fully subscribe to IBIT, but not much on the open market this year fit my idea of salary, age, or fit. I still say burn ALL the phone numbers for the Titans to pry J. McCourty away.

But what I want to know is this. Are the initial reports that he was very likely to sign here still holding true by any means or do they mean nothing now since he left without a contract?

*pisses in wind*

yes, or maybe no

The defensive roster going into the 2012 season. we won 12 games.

Is a #2 TE more important than running back, OL, receiver, corner, defensive tackle?

RB - Yes, because Gray/Blount are more than capable of being the runner and they have options with Bolden/White/etc for 3rd down back. I'd like to get another of the latter, though.

OL - About the same. I'd like a stud guard, but a return of Connolly at least gets them back to competence.

Receiver - why is receiver a big need? Everyone from last year returns, Amendola is healthier, LaFell will have an entire off season with his head on straight. Receiver is one of the least needy positions on the entire roster.

Corner - Obviously the biggest need right now.

DT - Yes. Siliga/Branch/Easley/Jones is more than capable. Of course I'd like a stud and another run stuffer, but those are supplemental more than necessary.

Chandler fills two holes a once, a backup to Gronk (an enormous need due to Rob's importance and the positional injury risk) as well as a versatile chess piece. Wright and Hooman are OK, but both are limited to one particular skill set, an offense with Gronk and Chandler is much harder to diagnose.

Well if Stevie thinks the Pats are going to wait for him to make a decision..Stevie will be wrong lol..Wouldn't be surprised if the Pats have already moved on.

I haven't read the last few pges but has anyone brought this up?

Chandler is his ex-teammate and he chise us over the Ravens. Wonder if he could sway Stevie here?

No he isn't. But the same argument was said about Moss when they got him that he was done.
I don't think Johnson is done. Moss was a so called problem child that stemmed around losing. Johnson just comes across as a self centered punk. IMO I dislike those type of players

Jason McCourty signed a $43 million dollar/5 year contract 2 years ago. May be tough to fit under the cap.

Don't forget training camp cuts and the great job Belichick did in 2014 of in-season pick-ups like Blount, Ayers, and Casillas.
